enthusiastic and encouraging English tutor
As an English tutor I have tutored all ages, but I specifically tutor A Level Literature where I have a wide knowledge of the curriculum - I have tutored students across all the examination boards. I am a happy and enthusiastic mature person, who believes strongly in education and the confidence and opportunities that can be gained. My first aim is to encourage and praise pupils in their work - I believe enjoyment of the subject is the key to doing well. I personally enjoy the discussions, the debates. the sparks that come with a broader knowledge of the subject. And that "light bulb" moment that...

I would love to use my passion for literature and the English language to help you in any area of your coursework, from getting to grips with the reading material and writing essays to organising your portfolio and preparing for the exam period.I think it’s much easier to study something if you can find a way to relate it to your own experiences. Effective English tutor
I am an effective and efficient tutor. By keeping a close eye on each student’s development, I ensure that each lesson has a specific objective and contributes towards their overall progress. I am organised and am always prepared, bringing clear lesson plans and homework to each session. Furthermore, I am able to tailor these to the needs of pupils and their parents and always design lessons in accordance with their specific needs; this adaptability is a skill I have practiced while working as a tutor over the past few months. Following an initial discussion about strengths and weaknesses and p...

Since then I have taught people from Cramlington, Durham, Dunston, Gateshead, and Sunderland (to name just a few examples). Each of my students has steadily increased their grades, achieving A*-C. My aim is to provide first quality tuition in Religious Studies and Philosophy and to help people become more confident in...
Josh has been tutoring my son for several weeks now. When asking my son what he thought of the sessions she shared that the lessons were varied and he makes it interesting and fun, ( My Son is in year 10 - age 14) We were looking for a tutor to help my son with his English as he had a difficult year last year with his teacher and it became a dread and a stress. Having Josh tutoring him has given him more confidence in the subject. He is keen to have the lesson and always comes down afterwards and shares something good about it. He seems to be progressing well at school and I know these sessions can only be helping with that.

Grace B
My daughter worked with Grace as she wanted to re-take her English Language GCSE to improve her grade. My daughter thought Grace was a fantastic teacher. After her first lesson she said she had learnt more in an hour with her than she had in her previous two years at school! She has a lovely friendly manner and put my daughter at ease straight away. She also puts a lot into the lessons through preparation, marking and generally guiding the learning where it's needed most. As an examiner herself she also has a clear understanding of what students need to work on to succeed. Couldn't recommend her highly enough and whether or not my daughter does improve her grade, I know that the lessons were worthwhile. Thank you Grace!

John M
John has been nothing short of a miracle worker with our Year 9 son. In a matter of a few lessons his confidence in English has really grown. He was previously really disengaged with English & it was a real effort to get him to spend any amount of time on it. Now with John’s encouragement, he actually shows me his English homework & wants to improve, work at it. Highly recommend

Anita S
Anita really helps me with English - especially by going through the mark scheme in greater detail than in class, which is really useful when it comes to improving my essays. She also has helped with improving my analysis, providing me with stronger context and helping me add depth to it. I really recommend her as she is great!

Cerise S
Cerise has been such a lovely and supportive English tutor for Eisa. She really helped him find structure and confidence in his lessons and I could see the difference in how he approached his reading and writing. She always came well prepared with materials and gave clear guidance on what to work on..for example, getting him to read A Christmas Carol and pick out key quotes and themes to discuss together.
Eisa really enjoyed her lessons and found her teaching style easy to follow. She’s been patient, encouraging and genuinely invested in his progress. We’ve really appreciated all her help!

Brilliant English tutors who you’ll really click with.
Our experienced tutors take the time to understand where each student needs to focus and their preferred way of learning. They make a measurable difference – 90% of all students improve by at least one grade.
My child is at Duke's Secondary. Can a tutor help them specifically with the GCSE English curriculum?
Absolutely. Our tutors are experienced with the AQA, Edexcel, and other exam board specifications used in schools across the UK. You can find a tutor who can focus specifically on the texts your child is studying and the exam techniques they need to master for their GCSEs.
We're hoping my child can go on to study at Newcastle or Northumbria. Can a tutor help with the skills needed for university applications?
Yes, many of our English tutors have experience helping students prepare for higher education. They can help your child develop the critical thinking and essay-writing skills needed for A-Levels, and can also provide support with personal statements for their university applications.
What happens if my child doesn't click with their first tutor?
It's really important that your child feels comfortable with their tutor. That's why we have our First Lesson Guarantee. If you don't get on with your tutor, email our support team at support@tutorful.co.uk and we will cover your first session with a new tutor.
How do I choose the right English tutor for my child?
You can read detailed tutor profiles, watch their introductory videos, and check reviews from other parents. Many tutors offer a free 15-minute video chat, which is a great way for you and your child to meet them and make sure it's a good fit before booking a lesson.
How can a tutor help my child if they've lost their confidence in English?
This is where one-to-one tutoring really shines. A tutor provides a safe, patient, and encouraging space for your child to ask questions without fear of judgement. By breaking down tricky topics and celebrating small wins, they can help rebuild your child's self-belief, step by step.
Can tutoring help my child improve their GCSE grade?
Yes, it can make a real difference. Our data shows that focused one-to-one support can help improve a student's GCSE results by up to two grades. In fact, 90% of our students improve by at least one grade, which can be crucial for meeting college or sixth form entry requirements.
Are all the tutors background-checked?
Yes, your child's safety is our top priority. Every single one of our tutors undergoes a thorough vetting process, including an identity check and a background check (DBS or equivalent). We only accept 1 in 8 tutors who apply.
How much does an online English tutor cost?
Our tutors set their own hourly rates, which are displayed clearly on their profiles. Prices vary based on the tutor's experience and the level of study. You can filter your search by price to find a great tutor who fits your family's budget.
How does online tutoring actually work?
Lessons take place in our purpose-built online classroom. It has a video chat, an interactive whiteboard, and tools for sharing documents. It’s a simple and effective way for your child to learn from the comfort of your home.
What makes Tutorful different from other platforms?
We're trusted by thousands of families, with a 4.6-star rating from over 4,100 reviews. Our focus is on finding the perfect tutor for your child's individual needs. We combine the UK's best tutors with a simple, secure, and supportive platform to help your child achieve their goals.
How long are the tutoring sessions and how often should they be?
Most sessions are an hour long, which is usually ideal for keeping your child focused. Most families opt for one session a week, but you can arrange a frequency that suits your child's needs and your schedule directly with your tutor.
Do you only offer academic subjects, or can my child learn other skills?
We offer a huge range of subjects beyond the school curriculum. From learning a musical instrument like the guitar to coding languages like Python or even public speaking, you can find an expert tutor to help your child explore their passions.
