Shannon S
Highly Specialised Philosophy tutor
Hello! Here is a bit about me:I am a former teacher and private tutor of over 12 years. My specialist subject is Philosophy and I am highly specialised in the OCR and AQA exam boards.I also teach History, and this was my main subject as a high school teacher. Please check and see if I can accommodate the topics/units you are studying!I have a First Class Honors Degree from Queen Mary, University of London where I specialised in the History of Philosophy. I have published work in this field which is available for viewing on request. I'm also the creator of an A-Level Philosophy help and revision...
Shannon was my AQA A-Level Philosophy tutor and honestly, words cannot describe how wonderful and beneficial she was to my achievements within this subject! I was really struggling with philosophy and she helped me increase my grade significantly so I could secure a place in Durham University. She created these incredibly helpful PowerPoint presentations which simplified complex concepts into simple, coherent explanations. Also, she provided an amazing 25 marker essay structure and explained how each criteria within the mark scheme could be obtained. Shannon helped revitalise my love for philosophy, which had dwindled a due to exams and stress. I initially felt reluctant to share my opinions within my class because I felt my knowledge on philosophy was not strong enough, but, with Shannon, I felt comfortable and confident to share my opinions, question philosophers and deeply explore topics. We have had many delightful and thorough philosophical conversations and debates. I am forever grateful she was philosophy tutor! Thank you Shannon! :)

My child is aiming for a competitive university like UCL for Philosophy. Can a tutor help their application stand out?
Absolutely. Our tutors, many of whom are graduates from top universities themselves, can help your child develop the sophisticated analytical and essay-writing skills that admissions tutors look for. They can go beyond the A-Level curriculum to explore topics that show genuine passion and intellectual curiosity, helping to craft a compelling personal statement.
In my child's West London school, STEM subjects are heavily prioritised. How can a tutor nurture their interest in Philosophy?
We understand this concern completely. A one-to-one tutor provides a dedicated space for your child's passion for humanities to flourish. They can explore ideas not covered in class, build confidence in their unique perspective, and see how philosophical skills are a huge asset in any field, ensuring their interests are valued and developed.
Is online tutoring as effective as in-person for a discussion-heavy subject like Philosophy?
Yes, and in many ways, it's even better. Our online classroom has interactive whiteboards perfect for mapping out arguments, and the focused one-to-one environment encourages deep conversation without classroom distractions. Plus, it gives your child in West London access to a far wider range of specialist Philosophy tutors from across the UK.
What if my child doesn't click with their first Philosophy tutor?
Finding the right personality match is essential, and we want you to be completely happy. If the first session isn't a perfect fit, just email our support team at support@tutorful.co.uk and we will cover the cost of your first lesson with a new tutor.
How are your Philosophy tutors vetted?
We're incredibly selective. We accept only 1 in 8 tutors who apply. Every tutor undergoes a thorough vetting process, including an interview, ID checks, and a background check, ensuring your child learns from a knowledgeable, trusted, and inspiring expert.
My child is also interested in Politics and History. Can we find a tutor for those subjects too?
Of course. We have expert tutors across more than 300 subjects, from core academics like History and Politics to languages, music, and even coding. You can find dedicated specialists for each subject to give your child well-rounded support.
Can a tutor help with specific A-Level Philosophy topics my child finds difficult?
Definitely. Whether it's epistemology, metaphysics, or the works of a specific philosopher like Nietzsche or Descartes, our tutors can create tailored sessions to tackle the exact areas your child is struggling with, helping them build understanding and prepare for their exams.
How much do online Philosophy lessons cost for a student in West London?
Our tutors set their own rates, typically starting from £25 per hour, depending on their experience and level of expertise. You can easily filter by price when you search to find a brilliant tutor who fits your family's budget.
