Shannon S
Highly Specialised Philosophy tutor
Hello! Here is a bit about me:I am a former teacher and private tutor of over 12 years. My specialist subject is Philosophy and I am highly specialised in the OCR and AQA exam boards.I also teach History, and this was my main subject as a high school teacher. Please check and see if I can accommodate the topics/units you are studying!I have a First Class Honors Degree from Queen Mary, University of London where I specialised in the History of Philosophy. I have published work in this field which is available for viewing on request. I'm also the creator of an A-Level Philosophy help and revision...
Shannon was my AQA A-Level Philosophy tutor and honestly, words cannot describe how wonderful and beneficial she was to my achievements within this subject! I was really struggling with philosophy and she helped me increase my grade significantly so I could secure a place in Durham University. She created these incredibly helpful PowerPoint presentations which simplified complex concepts into simple, coherent explanations. Also, she provided an amazing 25 marker essay structure and explained how each criteria within the mark scheme could be obtained. Shannon helped revitalise my love for philosophy, which had dwindled a due to exams and stress. I initially felt reluctant to share my opinions within my class because I felt my knowledge on philosophy was not strong enough, but, with Shannon, I felt comfortable and confident to share my opinions, question philosophers and deeply explore topics. We have had many delightful and thorough philosophical conversations and debates. I am forever grateful she was philosophy tutor! Thank you Shannon! :)

Brilliant Philosophy tutors who you’ll really click with.
Our experienced tutors take the time to understand where each student needs to focus and their preferred way of learning. They make a measurable difference – 90% of all students improve by at least one grade.
My child is aiming for a competitive philosophy course at UCL or King's. Can a tutor really help?
Absolutely. Many of our tutors are graduates from top universities themselves and have first-hand experience of the application process. They can help your child hone their analytical skills, deepen their subject knowledge beyond the A-Level syllabus, and prepare for interviews, helping them build an application that truly stands out.
With the high standards at schools like Henrietta Barnett, how does tutoring provide an extra edge?
In highly academic environments, one-to-one attention can make all the difference. A tutor can work at your child's specific pace, focusing on the precise areas they find challenging. This personalised support helps consolidate their classroom learning and builds the confidence to articulate their ideas with clarity and conviction, giving them an edge amongst their peers.
Is online tutoring as effective for a discussion-based subject like Philosophy?
Yes, it's brilliant for it. Our online classroom has an interactive whiteboard perfect for mapping out arguments and breaking down complex texts together. The one-to-one format encourages deep discussion and debate, allowing your child to explore ideas in a focused, supportive environment without leaving your north-london home.
How do you ensure your Philosophy tutors are high quality?
We're incredibly selective. Only 1 in 8 tutors who apply are accepted onto Tutorful. Every tutor is background-checked, interviewed, and has their qualifications verified. We look for true subject passion and the ability to inspire students, so you can be confident your child is learning from a genuine expert.
What if my child doesn't click with their first Philosophy tutor?
We know that the right personal connection is vital. That's why we have our first lesson guarantee. If for any reason you feel the first tutor isn't the perfect fit, just email our support team at support@tutorful.co.uk and we will cover the cost of your first session with a new tutor.
How much do online Philosophy tutors for students in north-london cost?
Our tutors set their own rates, typically starting from around £25 per hour. Prices vary based on the tutor's experience and level of study (e.g., A-Level vs. university). You can browse profiles and filter by price to find the perfect tutor for your budget.
How flexible are the lesson times?
Very. That's one of the biggest benefits of online tutoring. You can schedule sessions for evenings, weekends, or whenever suits your family's busy schedule. You're not limited to tutors' local availability, giving you far more choice and control.
What A-Level subjects do your Philosophy tutors cover?
Our tutors cover all major exam boards for A-Level Philosophy and Religious Studies, including AQA, OCR, and Edexcel. Many can also provide support for the EPQ (Extended Project Qualification) and university entrance exams like the TSA (Thinking Skills Assessment).
Do you offer tutoring for other subjects that complement Philosophy?
Yes, we do. We have expert tutors across more than 300 subjects. Many students find that tutoring in subjects like History, Politics, or English Literature alongside Philosophy helps them build a broader set of analytical and essay-writing skills.
What equipment does my child need for an online lesson?
It's very simple. All your child needs is a laptop or computer with a webcam and microphone, and a stable internet connection. Our online classroom is browser-based, so there's no software to download.
Can I track my child's progress?
Of course. You can message your tutor at any time to ask for updates. Many tutors provide regular feedback on your child's progress, highlighting areas of improvement and outlining the focus for upcoming sessions. It’s a collaborative process.
How flexible are the lesson times?
Yes, absolutely. Many tutors have increased availability during half-term breaks and summer holidays, making it a great time for students to catch up on topics, revise for exams, or get a head start on the next academic year.
