What are A-Level Biology Exam Boards and Assessment

All major exam boards offer A-Level Biology, following similar assessment criteria. Grades are based on both practical and written examinations, though each board may have slight variations in structure. Below is an overview of two major exam boards, OCR and Edexcel, and what to expect from their assessments. While the experience is largely similar across exam boards, understanding key differences can help you prepare effectively and achieve the best possible grade. OCR assesses students through three written exam papers, covering both theoretical and practical aspects of biology. The first two papers include multiple-choice questions and account for 74% of the final grade, testing approximately two-thirds of the course content. The third paper, making up 26% of the final mark, consists of synoptic questions that require more in-depth responses. Edexcel’s A-Level Biology course spans two years and includes seven core topics, alongside 16 required practical experiments. Assessment is through three exam papers, weighted at 30%, 30%, and 40% of the final grade. These exams feature a mix of multiple-choice, synoptic, open-response, extended writing, and calculation-based questions, incorporating both theoretical knowledge and practical application. Understanding these requirements can help you approach your exams with confidence and maximise your performance.
