Shannon was my AQA A-Level Philosophy tutor and honestly, words cannot describe how wonderful and beneficial she was to my achievements within this subject! I was really struggling with philosophy and she helped me increase my grade significantly so I could secure a place in Durham University. She created these incredibly helpful PowerPoint presentations which simplified complex concepts into simple, coherent explanations. Also, she provided an amazing 25 marker essay structure and explained how each criteria within the mark scheme could be obtained. Shannon helped revitalise my love for philosophy, which had dwindled a due to exams and stress. I initially felt reluctant to share my opinions within my class because I felt my knowledge on philosophy was not strong enough, but, with Shannon, I felt comfortable and confident to share my opinions, question philosophers and deeply explore topics. We have had many delightful and thorough philosophical conversations and debates. I am forever grateful she was philosophy tutor! Thank you Shannon! :)

Ms. M has been absolutely fantastic. She breaks down complex topics into clear, manageable parts, making even the most challenging content much more approachable. Her ability to tie everything together across the course has really helped me deepen my understanding and develop my evaluative skills. Each session is structured and insightful, and she always offers detailed explanations that go beyond surface-level learning. I’ve come away from every lesson feeling more confident and prepared. Highly recommend!

Brilliant Philosophy tutors who you’ll really click with.
Our experienced tutors take the time to understand where each student needs to focus and their preferred way of learning. They make a measurable difference – 90% of all students improve by at least one grade.
My child attends a competitive school in Nottingham. Will Philosophy A-Level look less serious than other subjects for a Russell Group application?
That's a common concern, but top universities highly value the skills Philosophy develops. Our tutors specialise in showing students how to articulate these skills—critical analysis, logical reasoning, and clear argumentation—in their UCAS personal statements. They help frame Philosophy not as a soft option, but as a mark of a rigorous, analytical mind, which is a huge advantage for any competitive course.
Are there tutors who understand the academic standards expected at places like Nottingham High School or Bilborough College?
Absolutely. Many of our tutors are experienced in supporting students from high-achieving schools. They tailor their approach to match the fast pace and high expectations, focusing on developing the deeper analytical skills needed to achieve top grades and stand out in a competitive environment.
Does online tutoring really work for an abstract subject like Philosophy?
Online tutoring is brilliant for a discussion-based subject like Philosophy. The one-to-one format allows for in-depth conversation and debate that's hard to achieve in a classroom. Using features like shared digital whiteboards, tutors and students can map out arguments and deconstruct texts together in real time, making abstract ideas feel concrete and manageable from your home in Nottingham.
What if my child doesn't click with their first Philosophy tutor?
Finding the right personality match is crucial, and we want you to be completely happy. If the first session with a tutor isn't a perfect fit, just email our support team at support@tutorful.co.uk. We will cover the cost of your first lesson with a new tutor, no questions asked.
What are the main advantages of online tutoring for a student in Nottingham?
The biggest advantage is choice. Instead of being limited to tutors who live nearby, your child in Nottingham can connect with the UK's very best specialists in their subject, wherever they are based. It also offers incredible flexibility to fit around busy family schedules, with no travel time needed. All lessons are recorded too, which is a fantastic tool for revision.
Beyond Philosophy, can you help with other subjects my child needs for their university application?
Yes, definitely. We offer expert online tutors in over 300 subjects, from core GCSE and A-Level topics like Maths, English, and the Sciences, to university-level support and even practical skills like coding or public speaking. We can help build a complete support system for your child's academic journey.
How are your tutors vetted?
We're very selective. Only 1 in 8 tutors who apply are accepted onto Tutorful. Every tutor undergoes a rigorous application process, including an interview and a background check. We personally verify their ID and qualifications to ensure your child is learning from a trusted, high-quality professional.
How much do online Philosophy tutors cost?
Our tutors set their own rates, typically starting from £25 per hour, based on their experience and qualifications. You can browse profiles and filter by price to find a brilliant tutor who fits your budget. There are no hidden fees or long-term contracts.
How long are the tutoring sessions and how often should they be?
Sessions are typically an hour long, which we find is perfect for maintaining focus and making real progress. Most families opt for one session per week, but the frequency is completely flexible and can be adjusted to suit your child's needs, especially around exam time.
Can a tutor help with specific university entrance exams like the LNAT or TSA?
Yes. While not directly Philosophy exams, tests like the LNAT (for Law) and TSA (Thinking Skills Assessment) heavily rely on the critical thinking and logical reasoning skills honed in Philosophy. We have tutors with specific experience in preparing students for these admissions tests.
What technology do we need for an online lesson?
It's very simple. All you need is a laptop or computer, a stable internet connection, and a webcam with a microphone. Our purpose-built online classroom has everything else built-in, including a shared whiteboard and video chat, so there's no complex software to install.
How are your tutors vetted?
You can use the search filters on our website to narrow down tutors by subject, level, price, and availability. Read their profiles and introductory videos to get a feel for their personality and teaching style. Many parents find it helpful to send a message to a few tutors to discuss their child's needs before booking.
