I studied Theology at both Leeds Trinity College and Durham University, where I achieved a First Class Honours degree and later Merit. After doing regular guest teaching and classroom assistance, I took the PTLLS Level 4 at the Advance Training Academy and began tutoring in 2014. Since then I have taught people from Cramlington, Durham, Dunston, Gateshead, and Sunderland (to name just a few examples). Each of my students has steadily increased their grades, achieving A*-C. My aim is to provide first quality tuition in Religious Studies and Philosophy and to help people become more confident in...

Friendly Philosophy tutor
I have been teaching for over 15 years, in schools, universities, colleges and museums, as well as a private tutor. My students have ranged from children as young as 6 to adults in their 50s. I hold to the principle that the best way to learn and engage with a subject is to be as relaxed and comfortable as possible, and so I aim to set all students at ease. It's easier to use your own brain power when you know you are in a safe space!
I hold an undergraduate degree with joint honours in Egyptology and Classics, a Masters' degree in Classics with a focus on dramatic literature, and I am close...

Shannon was my AQA A-Level Philosophy tutor and honestly, words cannot describe how wonderful and beneficial she was to my achievements within this subject! I was really struggling with philosophy and she helped me increase my grade significantly so I could secure a place in Durham University. She created these incredibly helpful PowerPoint presentations which simplified complex concepts into simple, coherent explanations. Also, she provided an amazing 25 marker essay structure and explained how each criteria within the mark scheme could be obtained. Shannon helped revitalise my love for philosophy, which had dwindled a due to exams and stress. I initially felt reluctant to share my opinions within my class because I felt my knowledge on philosophy was not strong enough, but, with Shannon, I felt comfortable and confident to share my opinions, question philosophers and deeply explore topics. We have had many delightful and thorough philosophical conversations and debates. I am forever grateful she was philosophy tutor! Thank you Shannon! :)

Brilliant Philosophy tutors who you’ll really click with.
Our experienced tutors take the time to understand where each student needs to focus and their preferred way of learning. They make a measurable difference – 90% of all students improve by at least one grade.
My child is aiming for the University of York's Philosophy department. Can a tutor help with that specific goal?
Absolutely. Many of our tutors are experienced in helping students aiming for top universities. They can focus on developing the higher-level analytical and essay-writing skills needed to achieve the A* and A grades required for competitive courses, and help build the intellectual confidence that shines through in applications and interviews.
My child is at a good school, but Philosophy A-Level is still a struggle. How does tutoring add to what they're learning?
Great schools provide a strong foundation, but a one-to-one tutor can provide something different: completely personalised attention. If your child is hesitant to ask questions in a class of 20, a tutor creates a safe space to explore doubts, go over topics until they stick, and focus specifically on their individual areas of weakness.
Are your tutors familiar with the A-Level curriculum taught in York schools?
Yes. Our tutors are experts in the national curricula, including all major exam boards like AQA, Edexcel, and OCR used by schools across the UK, including those in York. They can tailor sessions to the specific syllabus and exam requirements your child is working towards.
Is online tutoring really as effective as meeting a tutor in person?
We find it's even more effective for many families. Online lessons use interactive whiteboards, screen sharing, and document collaboration, making them incredibly engaging. Plus, the main benefit is access. Your child in York can connect with a top Philosophy graduate from Oxford or a highly experienced teacher from London, not just who happens to live nearby.
How are your Philosophy tutors vetted?
We're very selective because we know how much trust you're placing in us. We accept just 1 in 8 applicants. Every tutor is background-checked, and we interview them to assess their subject expertise, teaching style, and passion for helping students. We look for tutors who are not just knowledgeable, but also brilliant communicators.
What happens if my child doesn't click with their first Philosophy tutor?
Finding the right personality match is crucial, and we completely understand that. That's why we have our first lesson guarantee. If it doesn't feel like the right fit for any reason, just email our support team at support@tutorful.co.uk and we will cover the cost of your first session with a new tutor.
How much do online Philosophy lessons for a student in York cost?
The price varies depending on the tutor's experience and qualifications. You can see each tutor's hourly rate clearly on their profile, so you can find someone who fits your budget. There are no hidden fees or long-term commitments.
How flexible is the scheduling for lessons?
It's completely flexible. You can arrange session times directly with your chosen tutor to fit around school, work, and other family commitments. Whether you need a lesson after school on a Tuesday or on a Sunday morning, you can find a tutor who fits your schedule.
What technology do we need for an online session?
It's very simple. All your child needs is a laptop or computer, a stable internet connection, and a webcam with a microphone. Our online classroom is built into our website, so there's no complicated software to download. It's designed to be as easy and intuitive as possible.
Can a tutor help with exam technique as well as the subject content?
Definitely. This is one of the most valuable parts of tutoring. Our tutors are brilliant at teaching students how to structure essays, manage their time in an exam, and understand exactly what examiners are looking for to award the highest marks. It’s often the key to turning a B into an A.
How do you measure progress in a subject like Philosophy?
Progress in Philosophy shows up in a few ways. It's in the improved clarity of their essays and the confidence with which they tackle difficult texts. Your tutor will provide regular feedback, and you'll see it when your child starts talking about complex ideas with more enthusiasm and understanding, and of course, in their school reports and mock exam results.
How much do online Philosophy lessons for a student in York cost?
We do! We have expert tutors across more than 300 subjects, from core GCSEs and A-Levels like Maths and English, to university-level support, professional qualifications, and even hobbies like learning a musical instrument or coding. We're here to support your family's learning journey, whatever it may be.
