Shannon was my AQA A-Level Philosophy tutor and honestly, words cannot describe how wonderful and beneficial she was to my achievements within this subject! I was really struggling with philosophy and she helped me increase my grade significantly so I could secure a place in Durham University. She created these incredibly helpful PowerPoint presentations which simplified complex concepts into simple, coherent explanations. Also, she provided an amazing 25 marker essay structure and explained how each criteria within the mark scheme could be obtained. Shannon helped revitalise my love for philosophy, which had dwindled a due to exams and stress. I initially felt reluctant to share my opinions within my class because I felt my knowledge on philosophy was not strong enough, but, with Shannon, I felt comfortable and confident to share my opinions, question philosophers and deeply explore topics. We have had many delightful and thorough philosophical conversations and debates. I am forever grateful she was philosophy tutor! Thank you Shannon! :)

Brilliant Philosophy tutors who you’ll really click with.
Our experienced tutors take the time to understand where each student needs to focus and their preferred way of learning. They make a measurable difference – 90% of all students improve by at least one grade.
My child's school in Portsmouth offers A-Level Philosophy, but I'm worried it's not enough for a top university. Can a tutor help?
Absolutely. This is a common concern, and it's where a specialist tutor can make a huge difference. They can go beyond the A-Level syllabus, introducing your child to university-level concepts and critical thinking techniques that will help their application and interview stand out. They focus on building the analytical depth that prestigious courses require.
Can a tutor help my child prepare for a philosophy-related degree at the University of Portsmouth or a Russell Group university?
Yes. Many of our tutors have experience guiding students through the university application process. They can help with personal statements, admissions test preparation, and interview practice, focusing on the specific skills and knowledge that admissions tutors at institutions like these are looking for.
Is online tutoring really effective for a subject like Philosophy that's all about debate?
It’s brilliant for it. Our online platform's interactive whiteboard is perfect for mapping out arguments, analysing texts together, and deconstructing complex ideas in real-time. The one-to-one format allows for focused, in-depth discussions that might not be possible in a busy classroom, making it incredibly effective for a subject like Philosophy.
What if my child doesn't click with their first Philosophy tutor?
Finding the right personality match is essential, and we completely understand that. That's why we have our first lesson guarantee. If you don't feel the tutor is the perfect fit, just email our support team at support@tutorful.co.uk and we will cover the cost of your first session with a new tutor.
How do you ensure your Philosophy tutors are high quality?
We're incredibly selective. Only 1 in 8 tutors who apply are accepted onto our platform. Every tutor undergoes a rigorous vetting process, including an identity and background check, to ensure they have the subject expertise and teaching skill to help your child excel.
My child finds reading dense philosophical texts really difficult. How can a tutor help?
This is a very common hurdle. A great tutor can act as a guide, teaching your child strategies to break down complex texts, identify key arguments, and engage with the material confidently. They make challenging ideas accessible and, most importantly, interesting.
How much does online Philosophy tutoring cost for a student in Portsmouth?
Our tutors set their own rates, typically starting from £15 per hour. You can filter tutors by price on our website to find an experienced, high-quality tutor who fits your family's budget. There are no hidden fees or contracts.
How do we schedule lessons around my child's other commitments?
Flexibility is one of the biggest benefits of online tutoring. You can view each tutor's availability on their profile and book sessions at times that suit your family, whether that's after school, on weekends, or during the holidays. It's designed to fit around your life.
What equipment does my child need for online lessons?
It's very simple. All your child needs is a laptop or computer, a stable internet connection, and a webcam with a microphone. Our online classroom runs directly in your browser, so there's no complicated software to install.
How soon will we see a change in my child's confidence?
Every child learns at their own pace, but parents often tell us they see a shift in confidence surprisingly quickly. When a student has a dedicated expert who believes in them and helps things 'click', it can have a powerful and immediate positive impact on their self-belief.
My child is also studying Politics. Can we find a tutor who understands both subjects?
Yes, many of our tutors have expertise in multiple, related subjects. When you search, you can often find tutors with degrees in subjects like 'Philosophy, Politics and Economics' (PPE) who are perfectly placed to help your child see the connections between their studies.
How much does online Philosophy tutoring cost for a student in Portsmouth?
We do! We believe learning is for life. Alongside core academic subjects, our tutors offer lessons in everything from coding and music production to learning a new language or public speaking. There's a huge range of skills your child can explore.
