Hello my name is Masato. I am originally from Tokyo, Japan and now live in York, England. My greatest passion in life is teaching languages! I was a senior high school teacher in Japan for over 30 years for Kanagawa Board of Education. For most of my career my life has revolved around teaching 15 to 18 year olds as well as heading up the English department in 5 senior high schools across Kanagawa Prefecture. I was also the head football coach in all of these high schools. Over many years I have also taught exchange students and international teachers (from across the World) Japanese both at beginner...
We’ve only had a few lessons but my daughter is really enjoying her lessons so far! She just wanted to learn Japanese for fun and Sally has a warm and thorough approach which is just right for my 10 year old. Would recommend!

Natsumi H
Natsumi is a really fun and engaging teacher. Even when I make mistakes she takes the time to review them until I am comfortable to continue. I’m looking forward to our next lesson for the foreseeable.

Aki M
My 17 year old daughter has recently started lessons with Aki and is enjoying them immensely. She says she is learning a lot and likes that she gets plenty of opportunity in the lesson to practice speaking Japanese with Aki. Learning resources are excellent too and I wouldn't hesitate in recommending Aki to other parents. Thank you :)

Masato I
Esme has only had a few sessions with Masato but we are very impressed. His teaching style is very visual and easy to follow. He has a lovely mannerism and personability, very bubbly. He is extremely organised an efficient, punctual and follows up with notes too. Really like his style of teaching and would highly recommend.

Ikumi M
I never imagined I would enjoy learning a new language after my school years. Ikumi fosters a warm and welcoming environment, demonstrating patience and utmost professionalism. Her preparation for each lesson is impressive, and she even assigns homework when she's unable to conduct a session. I believe I couldn't have found a better tutor and I plan to continue with her until I achieve my personal goals.
Thank you Ikumi!

Misako G
Misako is truly the best teacher I've ever had. I've been interested in Japanese and studied by myself for some time and taking up the lessons was the best step forward in my learning. I was a complete beginner at the time, but quickly lessons with Misako became the highlights of my week. I am more comfortable speaking the language and am always looking forward to learn more. ありがとうございます!

My child's school in Liverpool doesn't offer Japanese. Can a tutor help this look good on a UCAS application?
Absolutely. A tutor can help your child develop their language skills to a high standard and guide them on how to showcase this unique ability on their personal statement. Demonstrating proficiency in a language like Japanese shows dedication and intellectual curiosity, which is highly valued by university admissions teams.
We're hoping my child will apply to the University of Liverpool. Can a tutor help with this goal?
Yes. While our tutors don't offer specific university admissions consulting, they can help your child build the skills and confidence that top universities look for. Mastering a unique subject like Japanese can make their application much more memorable and demonstrate a capacity for dedicated, independent learning.
How do I pick the right Japanese tutor for my child?
You can view each tutor's profile to see their experience, qualifications, and read reviews from other parents just like you. Many tutors also offer a short introductory chat before you book, so you can make sure they're the right fit for your child's personality and learning style.
What happens if we don't get on with the first tutor we choose?
Your peace of mind is our priority. We have a First Lesson Guarantee, which means that if you don't get on with your tutor, email our support team at support@tutorful.co.uk and we will cover your first session with a new tutor.
How much does an online Japanese tutor cost?
Prices vary depending on the tutor's experience and qualifications. You can see each tutor's hourly rate clearly on their profile, allowing you to find an expert who fits your budget. There are no hidden fees or complicated contracts.
How does online tutoring actually work?
It's simple and secure. Lessons take place in our purpose-built online classroom, which features a video chat, an interactive whiteboard, and a space for sharing documents. All your child needs is a computer or tablet with a stable internet connection, a webcam, and a microphone.
How do I know my child is safe online?
Your child's safety is our highest priority. Every tutor is background-checked, and we interview every applicant to ensure they are professional and passionate. All lessons are recorded, giving you complete oversight and peace of mind.
Is Tutorful just for academic subjects like Japanese?
Not at all! We believe in learning for life. Alongside traditional subjects, you can find expert tutors for a huge range of skills and hobbies, including learning an instrument like the guitar, coding in Python, or even public speaking.
My child is a complete beginner. Is that okay?
Of course. Our Japanese tutors work with students of all levels, from absolute beginners learning their first words to more advanced students preparing for proficiency exams. The tutor will tailor their approach to your child's starting point and learning goals.
How can a tutor help my child build confidence?
The one-to-one environment is fantastic for building confidence. Your child has a safe space to ask questions without feeling embarrassed. As they see themselves making real progress with a supportive mentor, their self-belief often grows in other areas of their life too.
How often should my child have lessons?
Most families find that one session a week is a great starting point for consistent progress. However, the schedule is completely flexible. You can arrange sessions with your tutor as often as you feel is necessary, whether that's for a regular weekly slot or for a few extra lessons to work on a specific area.
How do I know my child is safe online?
Yes, many of our tutors have experience helping students prepare for specific qualifications like the JLPT. You can check their profiles for this specialism or send them a message to ask about their experience before you book.
