Rory F
Rory is tutoring my son for his A level History and has been superb in his support from the get go. Rory has helped him understand the essay writing structure and technique distinctions between GCSE and A level. Rory's lessons are well planned and his advice and guidance tailored to detailed understanding of topic content and maximising the knowledge gleaned to various exam questions e.g. the difference between just describing and actual argument / evidence evaluation. Rory is very approachable and provides feedback to parents on how well lessons have progressed and, importantly, where the biggest opportunities are for the student ahead of their set homework. I would strongly recommend Rory as a tutor.

Brilliant History tutors who you’ll really click with.
Our experienced tutors take the time to understand where each student needs to focus and their preferred way of learning. They make a measurable difference – 90% of all students improve by at least one grade.
My child is at a highly competitive Cambridge school. Can a tutor really help them stand out?
Absolutely. In a high-achieving environment, personal attention is key. A one-to-one tutor can focus on your child's specific needs, whether it's mastering essay technique, analysing sources with greater depth, or exploring topics beyond the syllabus. This tailored support is designed to help them find their unique academic voice and confidence, which is essential for standing out.
We're aiming for a top university. How can a History tutor support their application?
Our tutors, many of whom are graduates from top UK universities, understand what admissions tutors are looking for. They can help your child develop the sophisticated analytical and argumentative skills required for A-Level success and beyond, assist with personal statement ideas, and even conduct mock interviews to build their confidence in articulating their passion for History.
Is online tutoring as effective as in-person for a subject like History?
Yes, and in many ways, it's even better. Our online classroom has tools like interactive whiteboards for planning essays and screen sharing for analysing historical documents together in real-time. Crucially, it gives your child in Cambridge access to a much wider range of specialists from across the UK, not just whoever happens to live locally.
How do you ensure your History tutors are high quality?
We're incredibly selective. Only 1 in 8 applicants make it onto Tutorful. Every tutor is interviewed by a member of our team, has their ID and qualifications checked, and undergoes a background check. We look for tutors with deep subject knowledge and a real passion for helping students learn.
My child finds writing History essays really stressful. Can a tutor help with that?
This is one of the most common areas we help with. A tutor can break down the process of essay writing, from understanding the question and structuring an argument to using evidence effectively and writing a powerful conclusion. They provide a supportive space to build these skills step-by-step, taking the pressure off.
Can a tutor use Cambridge's local history to make the subject more engaging?
Many of our tutors are brilliant at making learning relevant. If your child is studying the English Civil War, for example, a tutor could draw connections to Oliver Cromwell's time in Cambridge to bring the period to life. Whilst our tutors aren't based in Cambridge, they can certainly use its rich heritage as a fantastic teaching resource.
What if my child doesn't click with their first History tutor?
Finding the right personality match is so important. That's why we have our first lesson guarantee. If you don't get on with your first tutor for any reason, just email our support team at support@tutorful.co.uk and we will cover the cost of your first session with a new tutor.
Do tutors cover specific exam boards like AQA or Edexcel for A-Level History?
Yes. You can filter for tutors who have specific experience with your child's exam board, whether it's AQA, Edexcel, OCR or another. Many tutors list their areas of expertise on their profile, so you can be sure you're finding someone who understands the specific demands of the curriculum.
How much do online History tutors cost?
Our tutors set their own rates, typically starting from around £20 per hour. Prices vary based on the tutor's experience and the level of study. You can see each tutor's price on their profile, so you can find an expert who fits your budget.
How flexible are the lesson times?
Very flexible. Because our tutors are based all over the UK, you have a much wider choice of available times, including evenings and weekends. You can arrange times that fit around school, clubs, and family life, taking the stress out of scheduling.
How will I know if my child is making real progress?
Tutors provide regular feedback, and you'll see the progress in your child's confidence and their school work. Many parents tell us the first sign is their child feeling less anxious about homework or even starting to volunteer answers in class. That's when you know it's working.
What if my child doesn't click with their first History tutor?
Yes, of course. We have a huge range of subjects available, from core academics like Maths and English to subjects like Politics, Law, and Economics. Many students use Tutorful to get support across several subjects, all in one place.
