Approach to lessonsDuring the first lesson, I often ask pupils to attempt some questions independently to gauge their ability. After this, we will work together on the difficult portions of the work, and I may use drawings, real-life situations and metaphors to explain specific rules or principles. My goal is to guide s...

Eleanor B
Great first 'getting to know' lesson. Ellie helped Monty warm to the idea of tutoring by tapping nicely into his interests (he said afterwards that he really liked her) . He is positive about having another session next week. It was good that they could discuss his current school book; I think this is going to help him.

Hannah B
Within 5 minutes of specking to Hannah, I knew she was going to be my son’s tutor. She’s personable, passionate and knows her industry inside out. We’ve only had 2 lessons, but I can see the confidence and enjoyment on my son’s face as he’s learning. My son said after his 2nd lesson, ‘Hannah is so calm and I’m really enjoying tutoring’. We are actually so blessed to have found Hannah.

Nic H
Nic is a very experienced teacher who is able to adapt to different children, with an array of tools up her sleeve to keep the child engaged. After every lesson Nic is very good at telling me what they went through and what we should be focusing on. I think I am even learning myself on letter formation!
My daughter is a high functioning autistic person in reception, who needs to close some gaps in her phonics, numbers and handwriting. The leap from reception to year 1 can be difficult and Nic is helping me to get my daughter to a level where she will feel stable with the transition.
I was worried that a 1hr lesson would be too hard for my daughter and that she would not be engaged. My daughter is fully engaged and I am very impressed with what my daughter can achieve in her lesson.

My child hopes to go to Ashton Sixth Form College. Can a tutor help them prepare?
Absolutely. Our tutors can help your child build the strong reading comprehension and analytical skills needed to excel at GCSE, which are crucial for applications to competitive colleges like Ashton Sixth Form. They can focus on the specific skills required for their English Language and Literature exams.
We live in Dukinfield. How can an online tutor help my child prepare for university courses in Manchester?
Strong reading and critical thinking skills are vital for university-level study. A tutor can help your child master the art of reading complex academic texts, developing the analytical skills they'll need to succeed in degree courses at institutions like the University of Manchester or Manchester Metropolitan University.
What if my child doesn't click with their first Reading tutor?
Finding the right personality match is so important. That's why we have our First Lesson Guarantee. If for any reason you feel the first tutor isn't the perfect fit for your child, just email our support team at support@tutorful.co.uk and we will cover the cost of your first session with a new tutor.
How do I choose the right Reading tutor for my child?
You can watch introductory videos, read reviews from other parents, and check each tutor's experience on their profile. You can also message tutors before booking to discuss your child's needs, ensuring you find someone you feel completely comfortable with.
My child's confidence in reading is low. How can a tutor help with that?
Confidence is key. In a one-to-one setting, your child has a safe space to make mistakes and ask questions without fear of judgement. Tutors are brilliant at breaking down tricky topics into manageable steps and celebrating small wins, which helps to rebuild self-belief.
How do I know the tutors are qualified and safe to teach my child?
Your child's safety is our top priority. Every tutor on our platform has been through a rigorous selection process, including identity and background checks. We only accept 1 in 8 applicants, so you can be sure your child is learning from a trusted and experienced professional.
How much does an online Reading tutor cost?
Prices vary depending on the tutor's experience and qualifications. You can see each tutor's hourly rate clearly on their profile, allowing you to find an experienced tutor that fits your family's budget. There are no hidden fees or contracts.
How do online lessons work? What technology do we need?
All you need is a laptop or computer with a webcam, a microphone, and a stable internet connection. Lessons take place in our purpose-built online classroom, which features an interactive whiteboard, video chat, and document sharing to make learning engaging and effective.
How often should my child have a lesson?
Most families find that one session a week is a great starting point for consistent progress. However, the frequency is completely up to you and can be discussed with your tutor. You can book more sessions during school holidays or in the run-up to exams if needed.
How will I know if my child is making progress?
Our tutors provide regular feedback to keep you in the loop. You can also message your tutor at any time to discuss your child's progress. Most importantly, you'll likely see a positive change in your child's confidence and their school results.
What exactly will a Reading tutor cover with my child?
This is tailored to your child's needs. A tutor can help with anything from phonics and early reading skills for younger children, to improving reading speed, building vocabulary, and developing the critical analysis skills needed for GCSE and A-Level English.
Do you only offer academic subjects, or can my child learn a new skill like guitar or coding?
We offer a huge range of subjects beyond the school curriculum! Whether your child wants to learn to play the guitar, get started with coding, or even learn a new language for fun, you can find an expert tutor to help them explore their passions.
