My daughter Ariya has been taking lessons with Joanne for more than 6 months now and she(my daughter) has improved in her phonics and reading so much. Joanne is so kind, patient and a super fun teacher. They started when my daughter was 5 and I was a bit worried with how she would handle online tutoring but Joanne makes it seamless and Ariya is right there with her the entire time. 10/10 teacher!

Brilliant Phonics tutors who you’ll really click with.
Our experienced tutors take the time to understand where each student needs to focus and their preferred way of learning. They make a measurable difference – 90% of all students improve by at least one grade.
My child is starting at a primary school in St Austell. I'm worried they'll fall behind if they don't grasp phonics quickly. Can a tutor help?
Absolutely. This is a very common concern for parents. A tutor can provide focused, one-to-one attention to ensure your child feels confident with the basics of letters and sounds, giving them a strong and positive start to their schooling in St Austell.
We're thinking ahead to secondary schools like Penrice Academy. How can early phonics support help my child in the long run?
A strong foundation in phonics is the key to all future learning. When a child can read confidently, they can access the entire curriculum more easily. This early skill builds momentum, helping them thrive throughout primary school and preparing them for the academic demands of secondary school.
Can a tutor help my child prepare for the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check?
Yes, many of our tutors are very experienced in helping children prepare for the screening check. They can make practice feel like a game, building your child's confidence and familiarity with the format in a relaxed, encouraging way so they feel ready and calm on the day.
How do I choose the right phonics tutor for my child?
You can watch tutors' introductory videos, read reviews from other parents, and check their qualifications on their profile. Many offer a free introductory chat, which is a great way to see if their personality is a good fit for your child before booking a lesson.
My child finds learning to read a bit stressful. How can a tutor make it fun?
Our tutors are brilliant at making learning engaging. They use interactive online tools, educational games, and positive encouragement to turn lessons into an activity your child looks forward to. It’s all about building confidence by celebrating small wins.
How much does an online phonics tutor cost?
Prices vary depending on the tutor's experience, but you can easily filter tutors by price to find someone who fits your budget. The cost is clearly displayed on each tutor's profile, so there are no surprises.
What if my child doesn't click with their first phonics tutor?
We want to make sure you find the perfect match. If the first lesson with a new tutor isn't quite right, just email our support team at support@tutorful.co.uk and we will cover the cost of your first session with a different tutor.
Are all your tutors background-checked?
Yes, your child's safety is our top priority. Every single UK-based tutor on our platform undergoes a thorough background check, including an Enhanced DBS check, before they can start teaching.
How does online tutoring work for a young child?
Our online classroom is designed to be interactive and engaging. Tutors use a digital whiteboard, share their screen, and use fun resources to keep young children focused. It's a simple, effective, and convenient way for your child to learn from home.
How long are the lessons and how often should we have them?
For younger children learning phonics, shorter, more frequent lessons of around 30-45 minutes often work best to keep them engaged. You can discuss the ideal frequency with your chosen tutor, who will recommend a plan based on your child's specific needs.
How will I know if my child is making progress?
Your tutor will provide regular feedback on how your child is doing. You can also message them directly on the platform at any time. Seeing your child's growing confidence with books at home is often the most rewarding sign of progress!
Do you only offer academic subjects, or could my child learn something like piano or coding too?
We offer tutoring in over 300 subjects! Beyond core academics like Phonics, Maths and English, your child can explore hobbies and new skills like learning the guitar, speaking Spanish, or even coding. There's a tutor for almost every interest.
