Positive and enthusiastic English Language Tutor
I am an experienced tutor with an English Literature and Creative Writing degree and a passion for teaching. I worked at a tutoring company for two years where I was used to working with six children at a time, as well as doing private tuition for the past eight years. I enjoy being able to work one on one with children to help them to build their confidence and achieve their full potential. I am experienced in tutoring students through their English Literature and English Language GCSEs, particularly those studying under the WJEC, AQA and Pearson Edexcel exam boards. All my GCSE students have...
Leigh worked with our teenage son to prepare for his English Language iGCSE. With only a short time before the exam, they quickly developed a constructive rapport. Leigh was quickly able to assess where our son ‘was at’ in terms of his readiness for that exam. Over just a few sessions, analysis and writing skills were imparted and developed that meant our son felt prepared. Moreover, our son so enjoyed the way Leigh worked and his obvious passion for and skills in language analysis, that he chose to continue language analysis sessions just for the fun of it once the exam was over. A comment our son has made more than once after a session is, ‘I just love learning!’ The exam was passed really well – the outcome we hoped would be possible – but more significantly, we are grateful for Leigh’s ability to really draw out and develop our son’s enjoyment of the English language.

Ihsanur R
Last Year I did not do well in English Language in which I had a Grade 3. With my November resits fast approaching I felt very privileged to have Ihsanur as my tutor. He was able to present lessons in a concise way which helped me understand what went well and what I needed to improve on.
After the November resits I managed to obtain a Grade 4 in English Language AQA. I would really recommend him for those taking the GCSE 2026 because he is committed and dedicated in order to achieve academic potential with pupils. Thanks again Ihsanur for the hard work you do.

Flora I
Flora has been helping Isla prepare for her English Literature and English Language GCSE exams. From the first lesson, Flora “clicked” with Isla and quickly understood her needs. She made Isla feel comfortable and pinpointed areas for development and was so supportive. Isla felt at ease and could ask questions knowing that the necessary time would be taken to help her understand. Flora was incredibly accommodating, adjusting lesson times and dates as needed. She was also very responsive to messages and promptly returned marked work, going above and beyond to support us. Isla’s work was annotated and marked, providing valuable feedback and areas for future focus, which has been invaluable. Flora’s passion for the subject shone through, thank you so much Flora!

Brilliant English Language tutors who you’ll really click with.
Our experienced tutors take the time to understand where each student needs to focus and their preferred way of learning. They make a measurable difference – 90% of all students improve by at least one grade.
My main goal is getting my child into Portsmouth College. Can a tutor focus specifically on hitting that Grade 5 or higher?
Absolutely. This is a common goal for many Portsmouth families we work with. Our tutors are experts at tailoring sessions to exam board requirements and targeting the specific skills needed to move from a pass to a strong pass. They can focus on exam technique, analytical writing, and building the confidence your child needs to achieve their college ambitions.
We're worried our child gets lost in their large school class. How is online tutoring different?
This is exactly where one-to-one online tutoring makes a huge difference. In a private session, your child is the sole focus. The tutor can adapt their teaching style, pause to check for understanding, and provide instant feedback in a way that just isn't possible in a classroom of 30. It's a space where your child can feel safe to ask questions and build their confidence.
Is online tutoring as effective as having a tutor come to our house in Portsmouth?
Yes, and many families find it even more effective. Online tutoring gives your Portsmouth-based child access to a much wider pool of specialist tutors from all over the UK, not just who's local. With interactive tools, shared resources, and the convenience of learning from home, it offers the same dedicated support with added flexibility.
What happens if we don't click with the first tutor we try?
Finding the right personality match is so important, and we want you to be completely happy. If you don't get on with your first tutor for any reason, just email our support team at support@tutorful.co.uk and we will cover the cost of your first session with a new tutor.
Can a tutor help my child connect with Portsmouth's literary history?
Many of our English tutors love bringing the subject to life with local context! If your child is interested, a tutor could certainly explore the works and lives of figures connected to Portsmouth, like Charles Dickens or Arthur Conan Doyle, to make their studies more engaging and relevant.
How do you ensure your tutors are high quality?
We're very selective because we know how much trust you're placing in us. We accept only 1 in 8 tutors who apply. Every tutor is interviewed, has their qualifications checked, and undergoes a background check to ensure they are the best of the best.
My child also loves creative writing. Do you offer tutoring for that?
Yes, we do! We believe in nurturing all skills. Beyond English Language for exams, we have many tutors who are passionate about creative writing, journalism, public speaking, and more. You can find a tutor to help your child explore their passions and build new talents.
What technology does my child need for their online lessons?
It's very straightforward. All you need is a laptop or computer with a webcam, a microphone, and a stable internet connection. Our online classroom is built into our website, so there's no complex software to download.
How much do online English Language tutors cost?
Our tutors set their own rates, typically starting from around £20 per hour. You can filter by price when you search, making it easy to find an experienced, five-star tutor who fits your family's budget.
How often should my child have a lesson to prepare for their GCSEs?
Most families find that one hour a week is ideal for consistent progress. It provides enough time to cover topics in depth and practise skills without being overwhelming. Your tutor can discuss a plan with you after the first session.
Can a tutor help with the specific exam board my child's school uses?
Definitely. Our tutors have experience with all the major exam boards, including AQA, Edexcel, and OCR. You can view a tutor's experience on their profile or ask them directly to ensure they are a perfect match for your child's curriculum.
My child has really lost confidence in English. Can a tutor help with that?
This is at the heart of what we do. A great tutor's first job is often to rebuild a child's belief in themselves. Through patient, one-to-one support and celebrating small wins, they can help your child see that they *can* do it, transforming their entire attitude towards the subject.
