Leigh worked with our teenage son to prepare for his English Language iGCSE. With only a short time before the exam, they quickly developed a constructive rapport. Leigh was quickly able to assess where our son ‘was at’ in terms of his readiness for that exam. Over just a few sessions, analysis and writing skills were imparted and developed that meant our son felt prepared. Moreover, our son so enjoyed the way Leigh worked and his obvious passion for and skills in language analysis, that he chose to continue language analysis sessions just for the fun of it once the exam was over. A comment our son has made more than once after a session is, ‘I just love learning!’ The exam was passed really well – the outcome we hoped would be possible – but more significantly, we are grateful for Leigh’s ability to really draw out and develop our son’s enjoyment of the English language.

Ihsanur R
Last Year I did not do well in English Language in which I had a Grade 3. With my November resits fast approaching I felt very privileged to have Ihsanur as my tutor. He was able to present lessons in a concise way which helped me understand what went well and what I needed to improve on.
After the November resits I managed to obtain a Grade 4 in English Language AQA. I would really recommend him for those taking the GCSE 2026 because he is committed and dedicated in order to achieve academic potential with pupils. Thanks again Ihsanur for the hard work you do.

Smita Paneru S
I can’t recommend Smita enough! After struggling and retaking my English Language exam twice before she’s the only tutor who has truly managed to teach me in a way that makes everything click. She explains things clearly and in a way that actually makes sense. Smita never made me feel judged for needing extra help. She is an genuinly an incredible tutor who genuinely cares about her students’ progress. I honestly wish I’d found her sooner! I can’t thank her enough for helping me. :)

Flora I
Flora has been helping Isla prepare for her English Literature and English Language GCSE exams. From the first lesson, Flora “clicked” with Isla and quickly understood her needs. She made Isla feel comfortable and pinpointed areas for development and was so supportive. Isla felt at ease and could ask questions knowing that the necessary time would be taken to help her understand. Flora was incredibly accommodating, adjusting lesson times and dates as needed. She was also very responsive to messages and promptly returned marked work, going above and beyond to support us. Isla’s work was annotated and marked, providing valuable feedback and areas for future focus, which has been invaluable. Flora’s passion for the subject shone through, thank you so much Flora!

Can a tutor specifically help my child prepare for the English part of the 11+ for schools like Devonport High?
Absolutely. This is one of the most common reasons parents in Plymouth come to us. We have many experienced tutors who specialise in the 11+ English curriculum, focusing on key areas like comprehension, creative writing, vocabulary, and grammar to build the skills and confidence your child needs.
My child finds the competition for grammar school places in Plymouth overwhelming. How can a tutor help with their confidence?
We hear this a lot, and it's a huge part of what our tutors do. A one-to-one environment provides a safe space for your child to ask questions without fear of judgement. By breaking down challenges and celebrating small wins, our tutors help replace anxiety with a sense of control and self-belief.
Is online tutoring as effective as face-to-face for preparing for something so important?
Yes, and in many ways, it's better. Online tutoring gives your child in Plymouth access to a much wider pool of specialist tutors from all over the UK, not just who is available locally. With interactive tools like whiteboards and resource sharing, lessons are just as engaging, plus they save you travel time and fit easily into your family life.
What if my child doesn't click with the first English Language tutor we try?
It's really important that your child feels comfortable with their tutor. That's why we have a first lesson guarantee. If it doesn't feel like the right fit for any reason, just email our support team at support@tutorful.co.uk and we will cover the cost of your first session with a new tutor.
Are your tutors qualified to teach English Language for the 11+?
Yes. We have a rigorous selection process, and only 1 in 8 tutors who apply are accepted. Many of our tutors are qualified teachers, examiners, and subject matter experts with specific experience in preparing students for grammar school entrance exams. You can view each tutor's full experience and qualifications on their profile.
We're also concerned about the 11+ maths paper. Do you offer tutors for other subjects too?
We do! We have expert online tutors across more than 300 subjects, including Maths, Verbal Reasoning, and Non-Verbal Reasoning to provide comprehensive support for the 11+. We can help you find the right support for all of your child's academic needs.
How much do online English Language tutors cost for students in Plymouth?
Our tutors set their own rates, so prices vary based on their experience and qualifications. You can easily filter tutors by price on our website to find an expert who fits your budget. There are no hidden fees or long-term contracts.
How flexible are lesson times? We have a busy schedule with after-school clubs.
That's a key benefit of online tutoring. Our tutors offer a wide range of availability, including evenings and weekends, to fit around your family's commitments. You can see each tutor's schedule and book slots that work for you directly on their profile.
What technology do we need for online lessons?
It's very simple. All you need is a laptop or computer with a webcam, a microphone, and a stable internet connection. Our online classroom is built directly into our platform, so there's no complex software to download.
How will I know if my child is making real progress?
Communication is key. Your tutor will provide regular feedback on your child's progress, highlighting areas of improvement and outlining the plan for upcoming sessions. You can also message your tutor at any time to discuss how things are going.
My child passed the 11+! Can tutoring continue to support them through GCSEs?
Congratulations! And yes, absolutely. Many students continue working with their tutor long-term to build on their success. We have tutors who specialise in all levels, from KS3 and GCSEs right through to A-Levels and university applications, providing consistent support as they progress.
Do you only offer academic tutoring?
Not at all! Whilst we cover all core academic subjects, we also have tutors who can help your child explore a new hobby or passion. From learning a musical instrument or a new language to coding or art, we believe learning should be for life.
