John H
Experienced English Language tutor
Hi, I’m John, I’m 23 and I’m currently studying law at Demontfort University. I have been tutoring now for almost two years mainly in maths from KS1 up to GCSE and have developed the knowledge and skills to be able to tailor my lessons to best suit the student as no one style will work best for everyone. For example, some students may benefit from shorter lessons, some may benefit from taking the lessons at a much slower pace, some may prefer to just dive straight into questions and many other factors that we will be able to identify together and use to customise the lesson to best suit the stude...

Joanna C
English Language Tutor - A Cambridge medic helping you reach your potential
Hello, My name is Joanna. Currently teaching GCSE English and Drama in a local school, I have been working as a freelance tutor for the past 15 years. Outside of education, I am a writer and have worked with theatre companies in a variety of roles. Originally working with students dealing with SEN and integration into main stream schools, I've experience working with early learners all the way through to A Level. This includes preparation for SATs and grammar school entrance exams. My specialist subjects are English and Drama, which I teach to A Level. I am also able to teach certain topics in...
Leigh worked with our teenage son to prepare for his English Language iGCSE. With only a short time before the exam, they quickly developed a constructive rapport. Leigh was quickly able to assess where our son ‘was at’ in terms of his readiness for that exam. Over just a few sessions, analysis and writing skills were imparted and developed that meant our son felt prepared. Moreover, our son so enjoyed the way Leigh worked and his obvious passion for and skills in language analysis, that he chose to continue language analysis sessions just for the fun of it once the exam was over. A comment our son has made more than once after a session is, ‘I just love learning!’ The exam was passed really well – the outcome we hoped would be possible – but more significantly, we are grateful for Leigh’s ability to really draw out and develop our son’s enjoyment of the English language.

Ihsanur R
Last Year I did not do well in English Language in which I had a Grade 3. With my November resits fast approaching I felt very privileged to have Ihsanur as my tutor. He was able to present lessons in a concise way which helped me understand what went well and what I needed to improve on.
After the November resits I managed to obtain a Grade 4 in English Language AQA. I would really recommend him for those taking the GCSE 2026 because he is committed and dedicated in order to achieve academic potential with pupils. Thanks again Ihsanur for the hard work you do.

I can’t recommend Smita enough! After struggling and retaking my English Language exam twice before she’s the only tutor who has truly managed to teach me in a way that makes everything click. She explains things clearly and in a way that actually makes sense. Smita never made me feel judged for needing extra help. She is an genuinly an incredible tutor who genuinely cares about her students’ progress. I honestly wish I’d found her sooner! I can’t thank her enough for helping me. :)

Flora I
Flora has been helping Isla prepare for her English Literature and English Language GCSE exams. From the first lesson, Flora “clicked” with Isla and quickly understood her needs. She made Isla feel comfortable and pinpointed areas for development and was so supportive. Isla felt at ease and could ask questions knowing that the necessary time would be taken to help her understand. Flora was incredibly accommodating, adjusting lesson times and dates as needed. She was also very responsive to messages and promptly returned marked work, going above and beyond to support us. Isla’s work was annotated and marked, providing valuable feedback and areas for future focus, which has been invaluable. Flora’s passion for the subject shone through, thank you so much Flora!

How does online tutoring work for a family living in Bridgend?
It's simple and convenient. Your child connects with their tutor via video call using our secure online classroom. It has features like an interactive whiteboard, making lessons just as engaging as in-person. The best part for Bridgend families is the access it provides to top tutors across the UK, not just those who live nearby.
My child is studying for their WJEC GCSEs. Do your tutors have experience with this exam board?
Absolutely. Many of our English Language tutors have extensive experience with the WJEC (Welsh Board) curriculum. When you search, you can filter for tutors who specialise in the WJEC specifications, ensuring your child gets support that's perfectly aligned with what they're learning in school in Bridgend.
Is online tutoring as effective as having someone come to our house?
Yes, and in many ways, it's better. Online tutoring offers the same dedicated, one-to-one focus but with far more flexibility and choice. Your child can learn from the UK's very best tutors from the comfort of home, and sessions can be recorded to review later. Over 200,000 students have found success with our online platform.
What happens if my child doesn't click with their first English Language tutor?
We know that the right relationship is key to learning. That's why we have our first lesson guarantee. If you don't feel the first tutor is the perfect fit for any reason, just email our support team at support@tutorful.co.uk and we will cover the cost of your first session with a new tutor.
How are your English Language tutors selected?
We're very particular because we know you are too. Every tutor is interviewed, background-checked, and has their qualifications verified. We only accept 1 in every 8 tutors who apply, so you can be sure your child is learning from a true professional who is passionate about their subject.
My child loves creative writing but struggles with maths. Can you help with both?
Of course! We believe in supporting the whole student. We have expert tutors across more than 300 subjects, from core academics like maths and science to creative pursuits like music, coding, and art. You can find different specialist tutors for each of your child's needs on our platform.
How much do online English Language lessons cost?
Prices vary depending on the tutor's experience and qualifications, but typically range from £25 to £45 per hour. You can see each tutor's rate clearly on their profile, so you can find an expert who fits your budget. There are no hidden fees or long-term contracts.
Can a tutor help with specific areas like poetry analysis or persuasive writing?
Yes, this is where one-to-one tutoring really shines. A tutor can create lessons focused entirely on the areas your child finds most difficult, whether that's understanding Shakespeare, structuring an essay, or mastering grammar for their WJEC exams. It's targeted support that makes a real difference.
How long does it take to see an improvement in my child's confidence?
Every child is different, but many parents tell us they see a change in their child's attitude and confidence after just a few sessions. That feeling of being understood by a supportive expert can quickly turn 'I can't' into 'I'll try', which is the first and most important step.
What technology do we need for an online lesson?
It's very straightforward. All you need is a laptop or tablet with a webcam, a microphone, and a stable internet connection. Our online classroom is browser-based, so there's no complex software to install. It’s designed to be as simple and accessible as possible.
Can we schedule lessons to fit around sports clubs and other commitments?
Flexibility is one of the biggest benefits of online tutoring. Tutors offer sessions during evenings, weekends, and even school holidays, so you can easily find a time that works for your family's busy schedule in Bridgend without adding any travel time.
How do I find the right English Language tutor for my child?
You can use the filters on our website to narrow down your search by subject level (e.g., GCSE, A-Level), exam board (like WJEC), and price. You can also watch tutors' introductory videos and read reviews from other parents to get a real sense of their personality and teaching style.
