Hello my name is Masato. I am originally from Tokyo, Japan and now live in York, England. My greatest passion in life is teaching languages! I was a senior high school teacher in Japan for over 30 years for Kanagawa Board of Education. For most of my career my life has revolved around teaching 15 to 18 year olds as well as heading up the English department in 5 senior high schools across Kanagawa Prefecture. I was also the head football coach in all of these high schools. Over many years I have also taught exchange students and international teachers (from across the World) Japanese both at beginner...

Natsumi is a really fun and engaging teacher. Even when I make mistakes she takes the time to review them until I am comfortable to continue. I’m looking forward to our next lesson for the foreseeable.

Aki M
My 17 year old daughter has recently started lessons with Aki and is enjoying them immensely. She says she is learning a lot and likes that she gets plenty of opportunity in the lesson to practice speaking Japanese with Aki. Learning resources are excellent too and I wouldn't hesitate in recommending Aki to other parents. Thank you :)

Masato I
Esme has only had a few sessions with Masato but we are very impressed. His teaching style is very visual and easy to follow. He has a lovely mannerism and personability, very bubbly. He is extremely organised an efficient, punctual and follows up with notes too. Really like his style of teaching and would highly recommend.

Ikumi M
I never imagined I would enjoy learning a new language after my school years. Ikumi fosters a warm and welcoming environment, demonstrating patience and utmost professionalism. Her preparation for each lesson is impressive, and she even assigns homework when she's unable to conduct a session. I believe I couldn't have found a better tutor and I plan to continue with her until I achieve my personal goals.
Thank you Ikumi!

Misako G
Misako is truly the best teacher I've ever had. I've been interested in Japanese and studied by myself for some time and taking up the lessons was the best step forward in my learning. I was a complete beginner at the time, but quickly lessons with Misako became the highlights of my week. I am more comfortable speaking the language and am always looking forward to learn more. ありがとうございます!

Brilliant Japanese tutors who you’ll really click with.
Our experienced tutors take the time to understand where each student needs to focus and their preferred way of learning. They make a measurable difference – 90% of all students improve by at least one grade.
Can a tutor help my child tailor their UCAS application for competitive universities like Lancaster or Manchester?
Absolutely. Many of our tutors have experience helping students with their personal statements and university applications. Learning Japanese is a fantastic way to demonstrate intellectual curiosity, and a tutor can help your child articulate this unique experience effectively to impress admissions teams at top universities.
My child attends AKS Lytham. Can a tutor help them find a unique subject to stand out?
Yes, that's a common goal for many parents. While local schools provide an excellent foundation, adding a niche subject like Japanese can provide a real competitive edge. Our tutors can help your child develop this impressive skill, giving them something truly unique to talk about in applications and interviews.
How do I choose the best Japanese tutor for my child?
You can start by looking through our tutors' profiles, where you'll find their experience, qualifications, and reviews from other parents. Many tutors offer a short introductory chat before you book, which is a great way to see if their personality and teaching style are a good match for your child.
What if we don't click with the first Japanese tutor?
We know that the right fit is crucial for learning. That's why we have our First Lesson Guarantee. If you don't get on with your tutor for any reason, just email our support team at support@tutorful.co.uk and we will cover your first session with a new tutor.
Are the tutors' backgrounds checked?
Yes, your child's safety is our top priority. Every tutor on our platform has passed a background check and has been personally interviewed by our team. We're very selective, accepting only 1 in every 8 tutors who apply, so you can have complete peace of mind.
How much does an online Japanese tutor cost?
Our tutors set their own rates, so prices vary based on their experience and qualifications. You can see the price per hour clearly listed on each tutor's profile, allowing you to find an expert who fits your budget. There are no hidden fees or contracts.
How do online Japanese lessons work?
Our online classroom has everything your child needs for an engaging lesson. There's a video chat, an interactive whiteboard for writing practice (great for kanji!), and a tool for sharing documents. It’s designed to be simple and effective, making learning from home easy.
Can learning Japanese really help with a university application?
Definitely. It shows a level of commitment and intellectual curiosity that goes beyond the standard curriculum. It's a skill that demonstrates a global mindset and the ability to tackle a complex challenge – qualities that are highly valued by competitive universities.
How many lessons will my child need to see progress?
This really depends on your child's starting point and their goals. Most parents find that a regular weekly lesson helps build momentum and confidence. Your tutor will work with you to create a plan that suits your child's needs and pace.
What qualifications do your Japanese tutors have?
Our tutors come from a wide range of backgrounds. Many are native speakers, qualified teachers, or university graduates with a degree in Japanese or East Asian studies. You can view each tutor's specific qualifications and experience on their profile to find the perfect expert for your child.
Is Tutorful just for academic subjects, or can my child learn other skills?
We offer tutoring in a huge range of subjects and skills! Beyond core academics, your child can learn everything from playing the guitar and coding in Python to public speaking and creative writing. It's a great way to support their hobbies and personal development too.
How do online Japanese lessons work?
One-to-one attention from a tutor who is passionate about their subject is incredibly motivating. Lessons are tailored to your child's interests and pace, which keeps them engaged. Seeing their own progress week by week is also a huge confidence booster.
