Hello my name is Masato. I am originally from Tokyo, Japan and now live in York, England. My greatest passion in life is teaching languages! I was a senior high school teacher in Japan for over 30 years for Kanagawa Board of Education. For most of my career my life has revolved around teaching 15 to 18 year olds as well as heading up the English department in 5 senior high schools across Kanagawa Prefecture. I was also the head football coach in all of these high schools. Over many years I have also taught exchange students and international teachers (from across the World) Japanese both at beginner...
We’ve only had a few lessons but my daughter is really enjoying her lessons so far! She just wanted to learn Japanese for fun and Sally has a warm and thorough approach which is just right for my 10 year old. Would recommend!

Natsumi H
Natsumi is a really fun and engaging teacher. Even when I make mistakes she takes the time to review them until I am comfortable to continue. I’m looking forward to our next lesson for the foreseeable.

Aki M
My 17 year old daughter has recently started lessons with Aki and is enjoying them immensely. She says she is learning a lot and likes that she gets plenty of opportunity in the lesson to practice speaking Japanese with Aki. Learning resources are excellent too and I wouldn't hesitate in recommending Aki to other parents. Thank you :)

Masato I
Esme has only had a few sessions with Masato but we are very impressed. His teaching style is very visual and easy to follow. He has a lovely mannerism and personability, very bubbly. He is extremely organised an efficient, punctual and follows up with notes too. Really like his style of teaching and would highly recommend.

Ikumi M
I never imagined I would enjoy learning a new language after my school years. Ikumi fosters a warm and welcoming environment, demonstrating patience and utmost professionalism. Her preparation for each lesson is impressive, and she even assigns homework when she's unable to conduct a session. I believe I couldn't have found a better tutor and I plan to continue with her until I achieve my personal goals.
Thank you Ikumi!

Misako G
Misako is truly the best teacher I've ever had. I've been interested in Japanese and studied by myself for some time and taking up the lessons was the best step forward in my learning. I was a complete beginner at the time, but quickly lessons with Misako became the highlights of my week. I am more comfortable speaking the language and am always looking forward to learn more. ありがとうございます!

Brilliant Japanese tutors who you’ll really click with.
Our experienced tutors take the time to understand where each student needs to focus and their preferred way of learning. They make a measurable difference – 90% of all students improve by at least one grade.
My child is hoping to apply to the University of Leeds. Can a tutor help with this?
Absolutely. Many of our tutors have experience helping students with their university applications. They can help your child build the subject knowledge and confidence needed for a strong UCAS personal statement, and guide them through their A-Level or GCSE studies to meet the entry requirements for competitive courses.
Can a tutor help my child prepare for a Japanese GCSE or A-Level as a private candidate?
Yes, this is a very common reason parents come to us. Our tutors are experienced in guiding students through the entire curriculum for formal qualifications, helping them cover all the material and prepare for the exams, even if the subject isn't taught at their school.
How do I choose the right Japanese tutor for my child?
It's simple to find a great match. You can watch introductory videos, read reviews from other parents, and check each tutor's qualifications and experience on their profile. You can also send them a message before booking to make sure they're the right fit for your child's personality and learning style.
How much does an online Japanese tutor cost?
Prices vary depending on the tutor's experience and qualifications, but you can set your own budget and filter your search to find someone who fits. All pricing is shown clearly on the tutors' profiles, so there are no surprises.
What if my child doesn't click with their first Japanese tutor?
We know how important the right fit is. That’s why we have our First Lesson Guarantee. If you don't get on with your tutor, email our support team at support@tutorful.co.uk and we will cover your first session with a new tutor.
How do I know the tutors are safe and qualified?
Your child's safety is our top priority. Every tutor is background-checked and we interview every single one to ensure they are passionate, knowledgeable, and brilliant communicators. We only accept 1 in 8 tutors who apply, so you can be confident your child is in great hands.
How can tutoring help my child build confidence?
One-to-one tutoring creates a safe space for your child to ask questions without feeling embarrassed. When a tutor adapts their teaching style to your child's needs, they start to see real progress. Those 'lightbulb moments' are what build lasting confidence.
How long are the sessions and how often should they be?
Most lessons are an hour long, which we find is perfect for keeping students engaged. Most families choose to have one session per week, but you can arrange a schedule that works best for your child with your tutor. It's completely flexible.
We live in Leeds. How does online tutoring work if the tutor is somewhere else?
Our online classroom makes it feel like the tutor is in the same room. It has an interactive whiteboard, video chat, and file sharing, so your child can collaborate with their tutor in real-time. It means you get access to the best tutors across the UK, not just those nearby.
What tools do we need for online lessons?
It's very straightforward. All your child needs is a laptop or computer with a webcam and microphone, and a stable internet connection. Our platform works directly in your web browser, so there's no software to download.
Is this just for academic subjects, or can you help with hobbies like coding or music?
We offer tutoring for a huge range of subjects and skills, not just for school. Whether your child wants to learn to play the guitar, master Python, or pick up a new language for fun, we have expert tutors who can help them explore their passions.
How can tutoring help my child build confidence?
You can get started very quickly. Many parents find and book the perfect tutor for their child on the same day. Tutors are usually very responsive and can work with you to find a time for the first lesson that fits your family's schedule.
