Hello my name is Masato. I am originally from Tokyo, Japan and now live in York, England. My greatest passion in life is teaching languages! I was a senior high school teacher in Japan for over 30 years for Kanagawa Board of Education. For most of my career my life has revolved around teaching 15 to 18 year olds as well as heading up the English department in 5 senior high schools across Kanagawa Prefecture. I was also the head football coach in all of these high schools. Over many years I have also taught exchange students and international teachers (from across the World) Japanese both at beginner...
We’ve only had a few lessons but my daughter is really enjoying her lessons so far! She just wanted to learn Japanese for fun and Sally has a warm and thorough approach which is just right for my 10 year old. Would recommend!

Natsumi H
Natsumi is a really fun and engaging teacher. Even when I make mistakes she takes the time to review them until I am comfortable to continue. I’m looking forward to our next lesson for the foreseeable.

Aki M
My 17 year old daughter has recently started lessons with Aki and is enjoying them immensely. She says she is learning a lot and likes that she gets plenty of opportunity in the lesson to practice speaking Japanese with Aki. Learning resources are excellent too and I wouldn't hesitate in recommending Aki to other parents. Thank you :)

Masato I
Esme has only had a few sessions with Masato but we are very impressed. His teaching style is very visual and easy to follow. He has a lovely mannerism and personability, very bubbly. He is extremely organised an efficient, punctual and follows up with notes too. Really like his style of teaching and would highly recommend.

Ikumi M
I never imagined I would enjoy learning a new language after my school years. Ikumi fosters a warm and welcoming environment, demonstrating patience and utmost professionalism. Her preparation for each lesson is impressive, and she even assigns homework when she's unable to conduct a session. I believe I couldn't have found a better tutor and I plan to continue with her until I achieve my personal goals.
Thank you Ikumi!

Misako G
Misako is truly the best teacher I've ever had. I've been interested in Japanese and studied by myself for some time and taking up the lessons was the best step forward in my learning. I was a complete beginner at the time, but quickly lessons with Misako became the highlights of my week. I am more comfortable speaking the language and am always looking forward to learn more. ありがとうございます!

Brilliant Japanese tutors who you’ll really click with.
Our experienced tutors take the time to understand where each student needs to focus and their preferred way of learning. They make a measurable difference – 90% of all students improve by at least one grade.
My child is hoping to apply to universities like Lancaster or Newcastle. Can a Japanese tutor help their application stand out?
Absolutely. Having a formal qualification like a GCSE or A-Level in a less common subject like Japanese can make a UCAS application far more memorable. A tutor can help your child gain that qualification and write about their unique skills in their personal statement, showing universities they are a dedicated and globally-minded candidate.
Since Japanese isn't taught in most Carlisle schools, can a tutor help my child study for a formal GCSE or A-Level?
Yes, this is a very common reason parents come to us. Our tutors are experienced in the UK curriculum and can guide your child through the entire GCSE or A-Level Japanese syllabus, from core vocabulary and grammar to exam technique, ensuring they are fully prepared.
How do I choose the right Japanese tutor for my child?
It's simple to find a great match. You can browse tutor profiles, read reviews from other parents, and watch their introductory videos to get a feel for their personality and teaching style. You can also message tutors beforehand to discuss your child's goals.
What happens if we don't click with the first tutor?
We want to make sure you have the best possible experience. If you don't get on with your tutor, email our support team at support@tutorful.co.uk and we will cover your first session with a new tutor.
How much do online Japanese lessons cost?
Prices vary depending on the tutor's experience and qualifications. You can see each tutor's hourly rate clearly on their profile, allowing you to find an expert who fits your budget. There are no hidden fees or contracts.
Are the tutors qualified to teach Japanese?
Yes, our tutors are experts in their subject. Many are native speakers, qualified teachers, or have degrees in Japanese. We are very selective and only accept 1 in 8 tutors who apply, so you can be confident your child is learning from the best.
How does online tutoring actually work?
All lessons take place in our specially designed online classroom. It has an interactive whiteboard, video chat, and a space to share documents. It's a secure and effective way for your child to learn from the comfort of home.
How can a tutor help my child build confidence in speaking Japanese?
One-to-one lessons provide a safe and encouraging space for your child to practise speaking without the fear of making mistakes in front of a large class. Tutors use conversation exercises and positive feedback to help them feel more comfortable and fluent.
Is Tutorful just for academic subjects, or could my child learn something creative like music or coding?
We offer tutoring in over 300 subjects! Beyond core academic subjects, your child can learn practical skills like coding and public speaking, or creative hobbies like guitar, singing, or art. There's something for every interest.
How many lessons will my child need?
This really depends on your child's individual goals. Some students have a one-off lesson to prepare for a specific test, while others have regular weekly sessions to build their skills over time. You can discuss what's best for your child directly with your chosen tutor.
Can we get help with exam technique for Japanese GCSEs?
Definitely. Our tutors are brilliant at helping students understand what examiners are looking for. They can work on past papers, improve time management, and teach your child how to structure their answers to earn the highest possible marks.
How does online tutoring actually work?
It's very straightforward. All you need is a laptop or computer with a webcam, a microphone, and a stable internet connection. Our online classroom is browser-based, so there's no software to download.
