Hello my name is Masato. I am originally from Tokyo, Japan and now live in York, England. My greatest passion in life is teaching languages! I was a senior high school teacher in Japan for over 30 years for Kanagawa Board of Education. For most of my career my life has revolved around teaching 15 to 18 year olds as well as heading up the English department in 5 senior high schools across Kanagawa Prefecture. I was also the head football coach in all of these high schools. Over many years I have also taught exchange students and international teachers (from across the World) Japanese both at beginner...
We’ve only had a few lessons but my daughter is really enjoying her lessons so far! She just wanted to learn Japanese for fun and Sally has a warm and thorough approach which is just right for my 10 year old. Would recommend!

Natsumi H
Natsumi is a really fun and engaging teacher. Even when I make mistakes she takes the time to review them until I am comfortable to continue. I’m looking forward to our next lesson for the foreseeable.

Aki M
My 17 year old daughter has recently started lessons with Aki and is enjoying them immensely. She says she is learning a lot and likes that she gets plenty of opportunity in the lesson to practice speaking Japanese with Aki. Learning resources are excellent too and I wouldn't hesitate in recommending Aki to other parents. Thank you :)

Masato I
Esme has only had a few sessions with Masato but we are very impressed. His teaching style is very visual and easy to follow. He has a lovely mannerism and personability, very bubbly. He is extremely organised an efficient, punctual and follows up with notes too. Really like his style of teaching and would highly recommend.

Ikumi M
I never imagined I would enjoy learning a new language after my school years. Ikumi fosters a warm and welcoming environment, demonstrating patience and utmost professionalism. Her preparation for each lesson is impressive, and she even assigns homework when she's unable to conduct a session. I believe I couldn't have found a better tutor and I plan to continue with her until I achieve my personal goals.
Thank you Ikumi!

Misako G
Misako is truly the best teacher I've ever had. I've been interested in Japanese and studied by myself for some time and taking up the lessons was the best step forward in my learning. I was a complete beginner at the time, but quickly lessons with Misako became the highlights of my week. I am more comfortable speaking the language and am always looking forward to learn more. ありがとうございます!

Brilliant Japanese tutors who you’ll really click with.
Our experienced tutors take the time to understand where each student needs to focus and their preferred way of learning. They make a measurable difference – 90% of all students improve by at least one grade.
My child wants to apply to the University of Manchester. Can a tutor help their application stand out?
Absolutely. A tutor can help your child develop their Japanese skills to a high level, which is a fantastic way to demonstrate academic curiosity and dedication on a UCAS application. They can also help your child articulate this passion effectively in their personal statement, making them a more memorable candidate for competitive courses.
Since schools in Fulwood don't offer it, can a tutor help my child work towards a Japanese GCSE?
Yes, many of our tutors are experienced in preparing students for formal qualifications like GCSEs and A-Levels, even if they are studying independently. They can cover the full curriculum, help with exam technique, and build the confidence your child needs to achieve a great result.
What happens if my child doesn't click with their first tutor?
We know that the right fit is crucial for learning. That's why we have our First Lesson Guarantee. If you don't get on with your tutor, email our support team at support@tutorful.co.uk and we will cover your first session with a new tutor.
How do I choose the right Japanese tutor for my child?
You can watch tutors' introductory videos, read reviews from other parents, and check their qualifications on their profile. We recommend sending messages to a few tutors to discuss your child's goals before booking. It helps you get a feel for their teaching style and find the perfect match.
How much do online Japanese tutors cost?
Prices vary depending on the tutor's experience and qualifications. You can see each tutor's hourly rate clearly on their profile, allowing you to find an expert who fits your budget. There are no hidden fees or contracts.
How can I be sure the tutors are safe and qualified?
Your child's safety is our top priority. Every tutor is background-checked and we interview every applicant to ensure they are knowledgeable and passionate. We only accept 1 in 8 tutors who apply, so you can be confident your child is in safe, expert hands.
How does online tutoring work?
It's simple and effective! All lessons take place in our purpose-built online classroom, which features a video chat, an interactive whiteboard, and document sharing. It has all the tools needed for your child to engage with their tutor and learn just as they would in person.
Do you only offer academic subjects, or could my child learn guitar or coding too?
We offer a huge range of subjects beyond the school curriculum. Whether your child wants to learn a musical instrument like the guitar, a new language, or practical skills like coding, you can find an expert tutor to help them pursue their interests.
Can a tutor help my child with conversational Japanese?
Yes, definitely. Many parents seek tutors to help their child build confidence in speaking. Because lessons are one-to-one, they provide a safe space for your child to practise conversation, improve their pronunciation, and become more fluent.
How often should my child have a lesson?
Most of our students have one hour-long lesson per week, as this provides consistency and allows time for practice between sessions. However, the frequency is completely up to you and can be arranged with your tutor to fit your child's needs and your family's schedule.
What equipment does my child need for online lessons?
All you need is a laptop or computer with a webcam, a microphone, and a stable internet connection. Our online classroom is browser-based, so there's no need to download any special software.
How does online tutoring work?
Every child learns at their own pace, but the one-to-one focus of tutoring means progress can be seen quickly. Often, the first thing parents notice is a boost in their child's confidence, which can happen after just a few sessions.
