Aileen L
enthusiastic and encouraging English tutor
As an English tutor I have tutored all ages, but I specifically tutor A Level Literature where I have a wide knowledge of the curriculum - I have tutored students across all the examination boards. I am a happy and enthusiastic mature person, who believes strongly in education and the confidence and opportunities that can be gained. My first aim is to encourage and praise pupils in their work - I believe enjoyment of the subject is the key to doing well. I personally enjoy the discussions, the debates. the sparks that come with a broader knowledge of the subject. And that "light bulb" moment that...

Hard-working and dedicated English Tutor.
I'm originally from Aberdeen but moved to Edinburgh to attend university here. I graduated in English Literature and History before doing a Master's Degree in Journalism. Since then, I've been working freelance and trying to put together my first novel. On top of that, I've had a job at Kidzcare, helping out at numerous afterschool clubs around Edinburgh before moving into tutoring full-time.I have previously tutored in English, History, Modern Studies and Politics, taking multiple children from failing prelims to passing their final exams. While I don't have any formal teacher training, my experience...

I’m an enthusiastic and easy-going English tutor based in Edinburgh with over seven years’ experience helping students at all levels of the Scottish curriculum to achieve their learning goals. I would love to use my passion for literature and the English language to help you in any area of your coursework, from getting to grips with the reading material and writing essays to organising your portfolio and preparing for the exam period.I think it’s much easier to study something if you can find a way to relate it to your own experiences. With this in mind, I’d be keen to get to...

Josh L
Josh has been tutoring my son for several weeks now. When asking my son what he thought of the sessions she shared that the lessons were varied and he makes it interesting and fun, ( My Son is in year 10 - age 14) We were looking for a tutor to help my son with his English as he had a difficult year last year with his teacher and it became a dread and a stress. Having Josh tutoring him has given him more confidence in the subject. He is keen to have the lesson and always comes down afterwards and shares something good about it. He seems to be progressing well at school and I know these sessions can only be helping with that.

Grace B
My daughter worked with Grace as she wanted to re-take her English Language GCSE to improve her grade. My daughter thought Grace was a fantastic teacher. After her first lesson she said she had learnt more in an hour with her than she had in her previous two years at school! She has a lovely friendly manner and put my daughter at ease straight away. She also puts a lot into the lessons through preparation, marking and generally guiding the learning where it's needed most. As an examiner herself she also has a clear understanding of what students need to work on to succeed. Couldn't recommend her highly enough and whether or not my daughter does improve her grade, I know that the lessons were worthwhile. Thank you Grace!

John M
John has been nothing short of a miracle worker with our Year 9 son. In a matter of a few lessons his confidence in English has really grown. He was previously really disengaged with English & it was a real effort to get him to spend any amount of time on it. Now with John’s encouragement, he actually shows me his English homework & wants to improve, work at it. Highly recommend

Brilliant English tutors who you’ll really click with.
Our experienced tutors take the time to understand where each student needs to focus and their preferred way of learning. They make a measurable difference – 90% of all students improve by at least one grade.
My child is at St Benedict's. Can a tutor help them with the specific GCSE English curriculum they follow?
Absolutely. Our tutors are experienced with the main UK exam boards like AQA, Edexcel, and OCR. During your first chat, you can let the tutor know which school your child attends and the specific topics they're covering. They will then tailor their lessons to match the curriculum and exam requirements perfectly.
We're aiming for West Lakes Academy for A-Levels. Can a tutor focus on getting my child the Grade 5 they need in English Language?
Yes, this is a very common goal for parents we work with. Our tutors are brilliant at focusing on specific grade targets. They can identify the exact areas your child needs to strengthen to secure a Grade 5 or higher, from exam technique to understanding the mark scheme, helping to open up their future A-Level choices.
How do I choose the right English tutor for my child?
You can browse tutor profiles, watch their introductory videos, and read reviews from other parents. We recommend messaging a few tutors to discuss your child's goals before booking. This helps you find someone with the right experience and a teaching style that will suit your child.
How much does an online English tutor cost?
Our tutors set their own hourly rates, which you can see clearly on each tutor's profile. Prices vary based on experience, so you can find an expert who fits your budget with no hidden fees.
How does online tutoring work?
It's simple! All lessons take place in our interactive online classroom. It features a video chat, an interactive whiteboard, and a space to share documents. It’s a safe and effective way for your child to learn from the comfort of home.
Can tutoring really help my child's confidence?
It truly can. One-to-one attention from a supportive tutor creates a safe space for your child to ask questions they might be hesitant to ask in class. As they start to understand difficult topics and see their progress, their confidence often grows significantly.
What happens if we don't click with the first tutor?
We know that the right fit is crucial for learning. That's why we have our First Lesson Guarantee. If you don't get on with your tutor, email our support team at support@tutorful.co.uk and we will cover your first session with a new tutor.
Are all your tutors background-checked?
Yes, your child's safety is our top priority. We interview every tutor and all of them must have a valid DBS check. We're very selective, accepting only 1 in every 8 tutors who apply, so you can be sure your child is in safe, expert hands.
How often should my child have a lesson?
Most families find that one hour-long lesson per week is ideal for steady progress. However, you can arrange more frequent sessions, especially in the run-up to exams. It's completely flexible and you can discuss the best approach with your chosen tutor.
Do you only offer academic subjects, or could my child learn something like creative writing or public speaking?
We offer a huge range of subjects beyond the school curriculum! You can find tutors for skills like creative writing, music, coding, and even public speaking. It's a great way to support your child's passions and hobbies as well as their academic work.
How do I pay for the lessons?
Payments are handled securely through the Tutorful platform. Once a lesson is complete, your payment is automatically processed using the card details you have on file. It's simple, secure, and you never have to worry about handling cash.
Can a tutor help if my child is aiming for a university like Lancaster or Cumbria?
Definitely. Many of our tutors have experience helping students with their university applications. Beyond securing the necessary A-Level grades, they can provide support with personal statements and developing the higher-level analytical skills that universities look for.
