Highly experienced English tutor
I have over 30 years' classroom teaching experience and have taught students from 4 to 16 years of age, but mainly in Key Stage 2. As a Y6 teacher, my students' end of year results regularly showed accelerated progress in English, Maths and SPAG. Five years ago, I moved to online teaching, focusing on preparing students for SATs and Common Entrance exams (11+ and 13+) and teaching groups of students on the National Tutoring Programme. I now divide my time between 121 English tutoring in a secondary school and online KS2/3 English and KS2 maths tuition. My English classes are geared towards encouraging...

Passionate and enthusiastic English Tutor
I have been a teacher of both English Language and Literature for the past 5 years. I am proud to have been a help to a number of students who have gone on to successfully sit for their GCSEs. I am particularly experienced with the AQA GCSE exam format, but I am qualified to teach all exam boards.I am currently reading for my PhD at the University of York, where I am studying English romantic literature, with a particular focus on the study of Keats. I completed my PGCE at the University of Nottingham. However, I did my BA at the University of Malta as that is where I grew up before moving to the...

Lucy C
Experienced English Tutor - KS3, GCSE, A level, University
Welcome to my profile. I'm an experienced online tutor and examiner, who has been teaching English Language & Literature and Religious Studies online since 2013. I am a fully qualified teacher with a Post-Graduate Certificate in Education. While I am a passionate tutor of each of these two subjects individually, more importantly I feel that my experience in each subject contributes something to the other. For example, my knowledge of Biblical and Greek mythological references from my study of world religions is often really useful when interpreting certain texts by Shakespeare or other non-contemporary...
Ben is an amazing tutor, he’s really got my step son who has Asperger’s to engage, lessons are planned and structured, post lesson feedback given which really helps as I can send it over to his mom after his lesson and know what he needs to revise. Definitely a worthwhile investment in my step sons future!

Holly has been tutoring my son in English GCSE for the last half term. He has found the lessons very useful, working in a logical order through the different aspects of the curriculum. Holly is friendly, approachable and encouraging.
My Son has just had his mock exam results and has moved from just hitting an exam grade boundary to being 2 points off the next grade up. We are very pleased at his progress in a short space of time.

Mamun A
My son is really improving since starting lessons with Mamun. From the start of the lesson getting almost all questions wrong to by the end completely understanding it all. Tested him a few days later and he got almost every question right without any help at all he remembered all the punctuation in all questions, shocked how much he's improved from just one lesson on it! Mamun's teaching is brilliant and it really seems to stick in my sons head. Also my son is very fussy with his ASD/ADHD and is often open about his feelings towards people, especially new people most often than not he will say he doesn't like this person because of this or that, but he said he likes his tutor and wants to do more lessons which is brilliant. Mamun is always on time, very patient and explains thoroughly, he gives brilliant feedback afterwards too. Highly recommend this tutor and I'm glad I chose him rather than someone else.

Nadiah K
Nadiah is an AMAZING English tutor.
Nadiah is very reliable, organised and efficient, prompting and guiding my son to keep on track outside of sessions aswell. I have had feedback from school after just a few months that the quality of my sons writing has improved significantly and teachers have asked if he has been doing anything different.
My son is also developing more of an interest in the subject which has been really nice to see.

Brilliant English tutors who you’ll really click with.
Our experienced tutors take the time to understand where each student needs to focus and their preferred way of learning. They make a measurable difference – 90% of all students improve by at least one grade.
My child attends The Frederick Gent School. Can a tutor help them specifically with the curriculum they're following?
Absolutely. Many of our tutors have experience with the specific curricula taught in schools across the country. When you message a tutor, you can ask about their familiarity with the AQA, Edexcel, or other exam boards your child's school uses to ensure they provide the most relevant support.
We're hoping my child can study A-Levels at a local college. Can a tutor help them secure the GCSE English grade they need for entry?
Yes, this is a very common goal for parents we support. Our tutors are brilliant at focusing on the specific skills needed to move from a Grade 4 to a Grade 5 or higher. They can help your child with exam technique, essay writing, and understanding the mark scheme to give them the best possible chance of securing their place on their chosen A-Level course.
What if my child doesn't click with their first tutor?
It's really important that your child feels comfortable with their tutor. That's why we have our First Lesson Guarantee. If it's not the right fit, simply email our support team at support@tutorful.co.uk and we will cover your first session with a new tutor.
How do I choose the right English tutor for my child?
You can read detailed profiles, watch introduction videos, and check reviews from other parents. We recommend messaging a few tutors to discuss your child's specific needs – like focusing on poetry analysis or creative writing – before booking. It’s all about finding someone your child will connect with.
How much does an online English tutor cost?
Our tutors set their own prices based on their experience, typically ranging from £20 to £40 per hour. You can see the price clearly on each tutor's profile, so you can find someone who fits your budget. There are no hidden fees or long-term commitments.
Are all the tutors background-checked?
Yes, your child's safety is our top priority. Every single tutor on our platform has passed a background check and has been personally interviewed by our team. We're very selective and only accept 1 in every 8 tutors who apply, so you can be sure your child is in safe hands.
How can a tutor help my child feel more confident in English?
Confidence often comes from understanding. When a tutor can take the time to explain a tricky poem in a new way, or work through an essay plan one-on-one, it removes the fear of 'getting it wrong'. These small wins build up, helping your child feel more capable and ready to participate in class.
How do online lessons actually work?
Lessons take place in our online classroom, which has an interactive whiteboard, video chat, and file sharing. It’s a dedicated learning space where your child can work directly with their tutor on everything from analysing quotes from 'An Inspector Calls' to practising grammar exercises.
Can tutoring help with both English Language and English Literature?
Definitely. Many of our English tutors are experts in both and can tailor lessons to cover whatever your child needs most. Whether it's preparing for the unseen poetry section in Literature or mastering persuasive writing for Language, they can create a plan that covers all bases.
How long will my child need tutoring for?
This really depends on your child's individual goals. Some students just need a few sessions to prepare for a specific exam, while others benefit from weekly support throughout the school year. You can discuss this directly with your tutor, who will help you create a plan that works for your child.
Is tutoring just for school subjects like English, or can my child learn other skills?
While we have fantastic tutors for core academic subjects, we also offer support for a huge range of other skills! Whether your child wants to learn to play the guitar, get started with coding, or even learn a new language for fun, you can find an expert tutor to help.
What happens if we need to cancel or reschedule a lesson?
Life happens, and we understand that! You can easily cancel or reschedule a lesson with 24 hours' notice directly through your Tutorful account, without any charge. It's designed to be flexible and fit around your family's schedule.
