I am passionate about education and enjoy working in an area where I can help others to fulfil their learning potential. Since 2014 I have been tutoring children (and occasionally adults), covering English, Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning, and Maths. I was also a home educator for over a decade, taking full responsibility for the education of my own children, both at primary and secondary level, in all subjects. I will take the time to get to know each student’s individual needs and abilities so that I can deliver lessons in the way that works best for them.I have a proven track record in helping r...

Passionate and enthusiastic English Tutor
I have been a teacher of both English Language and Literature for the past 5 years. I am proud to have been a help to a number of students who have gone on to successfully sit for their GCSEs. I am particularly experienced with the AQA GCSE exam format, but I am qualified to teach all exam boards.I am currently reading for my PhD at the University of York, where I am studying English romantic literature, with a particular focus on the study of Keats. I completed my PGCE at the University of Nottingham. However, I did my BA at the University of Malta as that is where I grew up before moving to the...

Michael B
Friendly, enthusiastic English Tutor
I absolutely love what I do, and channel that enthusiasm within each of my lessons. I believe a child can very easily see if a teacher is passionate about what they are teaching, which is why I believe only those who absolutely love their profession should teach. I want to provide the most engaging and challenging lesson for myself, because I hold very high standards for my quality of work, but more importantly, for the child. I want a child to leave each session safe in the knowledge that they have learnt something new that day.I like to approach each session differently, learning what interests...

Ben is an amazing tutor, he’s really got my step son who has Asperger’s to engage, lessons are planned and structured, post lesson feedback given which really helps as I can send it over to his mom after his lesson and know what he needs to revise. Definitely a worthwhile investment in my step sons future!

Holly has been tutoring my son in English GCSE for the last half term. He has found the lessons very useful, working in a logical order through the different aspects of the curriculum. Holly is friendly, approachable and encouraging.
My Son has just had his mock exam results and has moved from just hitting an exam grade boundary to being 2 points off the next grade up. We are very pleased at his progress in a short space of time.

Mamun A
My son is really improving since starting lessons with Mamun. From the start of the lesson getting almost all questions wrong to by the end completely understanding it all. Tested him a few days later and he got almost every question right without any help at all he remembered all the punctuation in all questions, shocked how much he's improved from just one lesson on it! Mamun's teaching is brilliant and it really seems to stick in my sons head. Also my son is very fussy with his ASD/ADHD and is often open about his feelings towards people, especially new people most often than not he will say he doesn't like this person because of this or that, but he said he likes his tutor and wants to do more lessons which is brilliant. Mamun is always on time, very patient and explains thoroughly, he gives brilliant feedback afterwards too. Highly recommend this tutor and I'm glad I chose him rather than someone else.

Brilliant English tutors who you’ll really click with.
Our experienced tutors take the time to understand where each student needs to focus and their preferred way of learning. They make a measurable difference – 90% of all students improve by at least one grade.
My child is preparing for the 11+ for grammar schools in Ripon and Skipton. Can I find a specialist tutor?
Yes, absolutely. Many of our English tutors have specific experience in preparing children for the 11+ entrance exams, including the verbal reasoning and comprehension sections common for schools in North Yorkshire. You can message tutors before booking to ask about their specific experience with 11+ preparation.
We're aiming for a top university like York or Durham. Can a tutor help with the step up to A-Level English?
Definitely. The jump from GCSE to A-Level English can be challenging. A tutor can help your child develop the advanced analytical and critical thinking skills needed to succeed, giving them a strong foundation for their A-Level studies and university applications.
How do I choose the right English tutor for my child?
We recommend reading tutor profiles to learn about their experience and teaching style. You can also see reviews from other parents, which is a great way to get a feel for who they are. Don't hesitate to send a message to a few tutors to ask questions before you book your first lesson.
Are all the tutors background-checked?
Yes, your child's safety is our top priority. We are very selective, accepting only 1 in 8 tutors who apply. Every tutor is identity and background-checked before they can teach on our platform, so you can have complete peace of mind.
How much does an online English tutor cost?
Prices vary depending on the tutor's experience and qualifications. You can easily filter tutors by price on our search page to find someone who fits your budget. The cost is displayed clearly on each tutor's profile, with no hidden fees.
How do online lessons work?
Our online lessons take place in a purpose-built virtual classroom. It includes a live video chat, an interactive whiteboard for sharing notes and diagrams, and a space to upload documents like essays or past papers. It's a simple, secure, and effective way for your child to learn.
What if my child doesn't click with their first tutor?
We want to make sure you find the perfect match. That's why we have our First Lesson Guarantee. If you don't get on with your tutor, email our support team at support@tutorful.co.uk and we will cover your first session with a new tutor.
How quickly will I see an improvement in my child's results?
Every child learns at their own pace, but consistency is key. Our data shows that 90% of our students improve by at least one grade. Regular sessions help build momentum and confidence, which are crucial for making progress.
My child is already doing quite well. How can a tutor help?
That's great! Tutoring isn't just for students who are struggling. For a child who is already doing well, a tutor can provide the challenge they need to deepen their understanding, explore topics in more detail, and turn a good grade into a top one, which can be vital for competitive A-Level and university places.
Can I speak to a tutor before I book a lesson?
Of course. You can send a direct message to any tutor through our platform to discuss your child's needs and goals. This is a great way to make sure they are the right fit before you commit to a lesson.
What happens in a typical English lesson?
The beauty of one-to-one tutoring is that there's no 'typical' lesson! Each session is tailored to your child. They might spend time analysing a specific poem, planning an essay structure, working on grammar skills, or practising exam techniques. The tutor will focus on whatever your child needs most.
Do you only offer academic subjects, or can my child learn other skills?
Absolutely! While we have thousands of expert academic tutors, we also offer support in hundreds of other areas. Whether your child wants to learn to play the guitar, get started with coding, or even learn a new language for fun, you can find a brilliant tutor on Tutorful.
