As an English tutor I have tutored all ages, but I specifically tutor A Level Literature where I have a wide knowledge of the curriculum - I have tutored students across all the examination boards. I am a happy and enthusiastic mature person, who believes strongly in education and the confidence and opportunities that can be gained. My first aim is to encourage and praise pupils in their work - I believe enjoyment of the subject is the key to doing well. I personally enjoy the discussions, the debates. the sparks that come with a broader knowledge of the subject. And that "light bulb" moment that...

I'm originally from Aberdeen but moved to Edinburgh to attend university here. I graduated in English Literature and History before doing a Master's Degree in Journalism. Since then, I've been working freelance and trying to put together my first novel. On top of that, I've had a job at Kidzcare, helping out at numerous afterschool clubs around Edinburgh before moving into tutoring full-time.I have previously tutored in English, History, Modern Studies and Politics, taking multiple children from failing prelims to passing their final exams. While I don't have any formal teacher training, my experience...

Hello! I’m Simon. I’m an enthusiastic and easy-going English tutor based in Edinburgh with over seven years’ experience helping students at all levels of the Scottish curriculum to achieve their learning goals. I would love to use my passion for literature and the English language to help you in any area of your coursework, from getting to grips with the reading material and writing essays to organising your portfolio and preparing for the exam period.I think it’s much easier to study something if you can find a way to relate it to your own experiences. With this in mind, I’d be keen to get to...

Effective English tutor
I am an effective and efficient tutor. By keeping a close eye on each student’s development, I ensure that each lesson has a specific objective and contributes towards their overall progress. I am organised and am always prepared, bringing clear lesson plans and homework to each session. Furthermore, I am able to tailor these to the needs of pupils and their parents and always design lessons in accordance with their specific needs; this adaptability is a skill I have practiced while working as a tutor over the past few months. Following an initial discussion about strengths and weaknesses and p...

Josh L
Josh has been tutoring my son for several weeks now. When asking my son what he thought of the sessions she shared that the lessons were varied and he makes it interesting and fun, ( My Son is in year 10 - age 14) We were looking for a tutor to help my son with his English as he had a difficult year last year with his teacher and it became a dread and a stress. Having Josh tutoring him has given him more confidence in the subject. He is keen to have the lesson and always comes down afterwards and shares something good about it. He seems to be progressing well at school and I know these sessions can only be helping with that.

Grace B
My daughter worked with Grace as she wanted to re-take her English Language GCSE to improve her grade. My daughter thought Grace was a fantastic teacher. After her first lesson she said she had learnt more in an hour with her than she had in her previous two years at school! She has a lovely friendly manner and put my daughter at ease straight away. She also puts a lot into the lessons through preparation, marking and generally guiding the learning where it's needed most. As an examiner herself she also has a clear understanding of what students need to work on to succeed. Couldn't recommend her highly enough and whether or not my daughter does improve her grade, I know that the lessons were worthwhile. Thank you Grace!

John M
John has been nothing short of a miracle worker with our Year 9 son. In a matter of a few lessons his confidence in English has really grown. He was previously really disengaged with English & it was a real effort to get him to spend any amount of time on it. Now with John’s encouragement, he actually shows me his English homework & wants to improve, work at it. Highly recommend

How do I choose the right English tutor for my child?
You can read detailed tutor profiles, check their experience with the Scottish curriculum, and watch introductory videos to get a feel for their personality. You can also message tutors before booking to discuss your child's needs. With a 4.6-star rating from over 4,100 reviews, you can trust the experiences of other parents.
Can a tutor help my child prepare for a course at Ayrshire College?
Absolutely. Many of our tutors are experienced in helping students develop the core English skills, like critical reading and essay writing, that are essential for success in further education courses at places like Ayrshire College.
My child is aiming for a university like UWS or Strathclyde. Can a tutor help?
Yes. A strong foundation in English is vital for university applications and study. Our tutors can help your child master the skills needed for Highers and Advanced Highers, strengthening their university application and preparing them for undergraduate-level work.
How much does an English tutor in Kilwinning cost?
Prices vary depending on the tutor's experience and qualifications. You can see each tutor's hourly rate clearly on their profile, allowing you to find an expert who fits your family's budget. There are no hidden fees or contracts.
How does online tutoring work?
It's simple and secure. All lessons take place in our purpose-built online classroom, which features a video chat, an interactive whiteboard, and a way to share documents. All your child needs is a laptop or computer and a stable internet connection.
Are your tutors qualified and safe?
Your child's safety is our top priority. Every tutor is background-checked and must pass a rigorous interview process. We're very selective and only accept 1 in every 8 tutors who apply, so you can be confident your child is learning from a trusted professional.
What if my child doesn't get on with their first tutor?
We want to find the perfect match for your child. That's why we have our First Lesson Guarantee. If you don't get on with your tutor, email our support team at support@tutorful.co.uk and we will cover your first session with a new tutor.
How can a tutor help if my child has lost confidence in English?
Confidence is key. A one-to-one tutor provides a safe, encouraging space where your child can ask questions without feeling embarrassed. By breaking down difficult topics and celebrating small wins, a tutor can help rebuild their self-belief, one lesson at a time.
Can a tutor help with the specific texts my child is studying at Kilwinning Academy?
Yes. When you search for a tutor, you can specify your child's needs. Many tutors have extensive experience with the SQA curriculum and texts commonly studied for National 5 and Highers, so they can provide targeted, relevant support.
How often should my child have a lesson?
Most families find that a one-hour lesson per week is ideal for consistent progress. However, the schedule is completely flexible. You can arrange more frequent lessons during exam periods or less frequent sessions as needed, all in agreement with your tutor.
How long does it take to see an improvement?
Every child learns at their own pace, but our tailored approach is designed for real progress. Many parents tell us they see a boost in their child's confidence after just a few sessions. In the long term, 90% of our students improve by at least one grade.
Do you only offer school subjects like English?
While we cover all academic subjects from Primary to A-Level and beyond, we also have tutors for a wide range of other skills. Whether your child wants to learn creative writing, play the guitar, or get started with coding, we can help.
