I am an effective and efficient tutor. By keeping a close eye on each student’s development, I ensure that each lesson has a specific objective and contributes towards their overall progress. I am organised and am always prepared, bringing clear lesson plans and homework to each session. Furthermore, I am able to tailor these to the needs of pupils and their parents and always design lessons in accordance with their specific needs; this adaptability is a skill I have practiced while working as a tutor over the past few months. Following an initial discussion about strengths and weaknesses and p...

Josh L
Josh has been tutoring my son for several weeks now. When asking my son what he thought of the sessions she shared that the lessons were varied and he makes it interesting and fun, ( My Son is in year 10 - age 14) We were looking for a tutor to help my son with his English as he had a difficult year last year with his teacher and it became a dread and a stress. Having Josh tutoring him has given him more confidence in the subject. He is keen to have the lesson and always comes down afterwards and shares something good about it. He seems to be progressing well at school and I know these sessions can only be helping with that.

Grace B
My daughter worked with Grace as she wanted to re-take her English Language GCSE to improve her grade. My daughter thought Grace was a fantastic teacher. After her first lesson she said she had learnt more in an hour with her than she had in her previous two years at school! She has a lovely friendly manner and put my daughter at ease straight away. She also puts a lot into the lessons through preparation, marking and generally guiding the learning where it's needed most. As an examiner herself she also has a clear understanding of what students need to work on to succeed. Couldn't recommend her highly enough and whether or not my daughter does improve her grade, I know that the lessons were worthwhile. Thank you Grace!

John M
John has been nothing short of a miracle worker with our Year 9 son. In a matter of a few lessons his confidence in English has really grown. He was previously really disengaged with English & it was a real effort to get him to spend any amount of time on it. Now with John’s encouragement, he actually shows me his English homework & wants to improve, work at it. Highly recommend

Brilliant English tutors who you’ll really click with.
Our experienced tutors take the time to understand where each student needs to focus and their preferred way of learning. They make a measurable difference – 90% of all students improve by at least one grade.
My child is hoping to study A-Levels at Derby College. Can a tutor help them secure the necessary GCSE English grades?
Absolutely. Many of our tutors specialise in helping students secure the grades they need for their next step. They can focus specifically on the GCSE curriculum, helping your child master exam techniques and build a deep understanding of the material to meet the entry requirements for Derby College.
We have our sights set on competitive universities like Loughborough or Nottingham. How can an English tutor support this goal?
Strong English skills are vital for applications to top universities. A tutor can help your child develop the advanced analytical and writing skills needed for A-Level success and beyond. They can also provide invaluable support with personal statement writing, helping your child articulate their ambitions clearly and effectively.
How do I choose the right English tutor for my child?
It's easy to find the perfect match. You can use our search filters to find tutors with specific experience, such as GCSE exam preparation or creative writing. Reading tutor profiles and reviews from other parents will give you a great sense of their teaching style and how they've helped other students succeed.
How much do online English tutors cost?
Our tutors set their own hourly rates, so you can find an option that fits your family's budget. Prices are clearly displayed on each tutor's profile, so there are no hidden surprises. You can find experienced, high-quality English tutors starting from as little as £20 per hour.
What if my child doesn't click with their first tutor?
We know that the right fit is crucial for learning. That's why we have our First Lesson Guarantee. If for any reason you feel the first tutor isn't the right match for your child, just email our support team at support@tutorful.co.uk and we will cover your first session with a new tutor.
How can a tutor help my child if they've lost confidence in English?
Confidence is key. A one-to-one tutor provides a safe, encouraging space where your child can ask questions without feeling embarrassed. By breaking down tricky topics and celebrating small wins, a tutor can help rebuild your child's self-belief and rediscover their enjoyment of the subject.
Are all the tutors background-checked?
Yes, your child's safety is our top priority. Every single tutor on our platform has passed a background check before they can start teaching. We are very selective, accepting only 1 in 8 applicants, so you can have complete peace of mind.
How does online tutoring actually work?
All lessons take place in our purpose-built online classroom. It features video chat, an interactive whiteboard, and the ability to share documents, making it feel just like you're in the same room. All your child needs is a laptop or computer and a stable internet connection.
Can tutoring really improve my child's GCSE English grade?
Yes, it can make a significant difference. Our focused, one-to-one approach is proven to help students improve. In fact, we can help boost your child's final GCSE result by up to two grades, giving them the best possible chance of success.
What happens in a typical online English lesson?
Every lesson is tailored to your child. A session might start with a quick chat about what they've been covering at school, followed by focused work on a specific area, like analysing a poem or planning an essay. The tutor will adapt the lesson to your child's energy and needs on the day.
How long will my child need tutoring for?
There's no one-size-fits-all answer. Some parents book a few sessions to prepare for a specific exam, while others prefer regular weekly lessons to provide ongoing support throughout the school year. You can discuss your child's goals with your chosen tutor to create a plan that works for you.
Do you only offer academic subjects, or could my child learn something different like a musical instrument?
While we're experts in core academic subjects like English, Maths, and Science, we also have talented tutors who teach a huge range of other skills. From learning to play the guitar or piano to coding and public speaking, we're here to support all of your child's learning passions.
