Holly has been tutoring my son in English GCSE for the last half term. He has found the lessons very useful, working in a logical order through the different aspects of the curriculum. Holly is friendly, approachable and encouraging.
My Son has just had his mock exam results and has moved from just hitting an exam grade boundary to being 2 points off the next grade up. We are very pleased at his progress in a short space of time.

Mamun A
My son is really improving since starting lessons with Mamun. From the start of the lesson getting almost all questions wrong to by the end completely understanding it all. Tested him a few days later and he got almost every question right without any help at all he remembered all the punctuation in all questions, shocked how much he's improved from just one lesson on it! Mamun's teaching is brilliant and it really seems to stick in my sons head. Also my son is very fussy with his ASD/ADHD and is often open about his feelings towards people, especially new people most often than not he will say he doesn't like this person because of this or that, but he said he likes his tutor and wants to do more lessons which is brilliant. Mamun is always on time, very patient and explains thoroughly, he gives brilliant feedback afterwards too. Highly recommend this tutor and I'm glad I chose him rather than someone else.

Nadiah K
Nadiah is an AMAZING English tutor.
Nadiah is very reliable, organised and efficient, prompting and guiding my son to keep on track outside of sessions aswell. I have had feedback from school after just a few months that the quality of my sons writing has improved significantly and teachers have asked if he has been doing anything different.
My son is also developing more of an interest in the subject which has been really nice to see.

Jeremy B
After the first lesson my son announced “That was amazing Mum, you need to watch the video, he was SUCH a good teacher”. This couldn’t have been more different to previous feedback on our attempts to find an English tutor. I’m delighted that Jeremy is structured in his lessons, but also his tone is very friendly and fun! My 12 year old son has Tourettes and ADHD, and has been quite unwell. It’s also done wonders for my mental health knowing Jeremy is guiding my son through English, after seeing the videos I do not have this skill! 100% recommend him!

Michelle P
Wonderful English Tutor!
Michelle has been an incredible English tutor for our daughter Sarah. She always starts each session with a fun “mind boggle,” which Sarah absolutely loves — it sets such a positive and energising tone for the lesson. From the moment she enters the class, Michelle makes Sarah smile.
Her lessons are interesting, engaging, and thoughtfully planned. Michelle brings a fantastic mix of humour, enthusiasm, and kindness to every session, and it truly shows in Sarah’s enjoyment and progress. She has a wonderful teaching style that keeps Sarah motivated and excited to learn.
We are so grateful for Michelle’s support and highly recommend her to anyone looking for an English tutor who can make learning both effective and fun.
Thank you Michelle.

My child is preparing for the 11+ exam for Havering grammar schools. Can I find a tutor with specific experience?
Absolutely. Many of our English tutors have extensive experience helping children prepare for the 11+ entrance exams, including the specific formats used for Havering's grammar schools. You can read tutor profiles, check their experience, and even message them beforehand to discuss your child's specific needs for comprehension, creative writing, and verbal reasoning.
We're hoping for a place at a competitive school like The Coopers' Company and Coborn. Can a tutor help with this level of preparation?
Yes, they can. A one-to-one tutor can provide the focused, challenging support needed for applications to highly-regarded schools. They can help your child develop the advanced analytical and writing skills required, building their confidence and ensuring they are fully prepared to perform their best.
What happens if we don't click with the first tutor?
We know how important the right fit is. That's why we have our First Lesson Guarantee. If you don't get on with your tutor for any reason, just email our support team at support@tutorful.co.uk and we will cover your first session with a new tutor.
Is Tutorful just for academic subjects like English, or can my child learn other skills like coding or playing the guitar?
It's for so much more! While we have expert tutors for core subjects like English, Maths, and Science, we also have talented tutors who can teach everything from coding and new languages to musical instruments like the guitar and piano. It's a great way to support your child's hobbies and personal development too.
How do I choose the right English tutor for my child?
You can start by using the filters on our site to find tutors with the right experience, for example, in GCSE or 11+ English. Watch their introductory videos, read reviews from other parents, and feel free to message a few tutors to discuss your child's goals before booking. It's all about finding someone your child will connect with.
My child is really struggling with GCSE English. Can a tutor really help improve their grade?
Yes, absolutely. Focused, one-to-one support can make a huge impact. We find that private tutoring can help improve a child's GCSE results by up to 2 grades. A tutor can work on specific areas of weakness, from understanding 'Macbeth' to structuring persuasive essays, giving your child the skills and confidence they need for exam day.
How much does an online English tutor in Havering cost?
Prices vary depending on the tutor's experience and qualifications. Tutors set their own hourly rates, which are clearly displayed on their profiles. This transparency allows you to find an experienced, high-quality tutor that fits within your family's budget, with no hidden costs.
How can a tutor help my child build confidence in English?
Confidence often comes from understanding. In a one-to-one setting, your child has a safe space to ask questions they might be too shy to ask in class. A great tutor celebrates small wins, patiently explains difficult concepts, and tailors their teaching style to your child, which can transform their whole attitude towards a subject.
Are the tutors' backgrounds checked?
Yes, your child's safety is our top priority. Every single one of our tutors undergoes a background check. We also interview every applicant and only accept 1 in 8 who apply, so you can be sure your child is learning from a trusted and verified professional.
How does online tutoring actually work? What do we need?
It's simple and secure. All lessons take place in our purpose-built online classroom, which features a video chat, an interactive whiteboard, and a space to share documents. All your child needs is a laptop or computer with a webcam, a microphone, and a stable internet connection.
How long are the lessons and how often should my child have them?
Lessons are typically an hour long. Most families find that one session per week is a great rhythm for steady progress, but the schedule is completely flexible. You can discuss what works best for your child's goals and your family's schedule directly with your chosen tutor.
How do I know if my child is making progress?
Our tutors provide regular feedback to keep you in the loop. You can also message your tutor at any time to discuss your child's progress. Most importantly, you'll likely see it for yourself – in your child's growing confidence, their improved schoolwork, and a more positive attitude towards learning English.
