Hard-working and dedicated English Tutor.
I'm originally from Aberdeen but moved to Edinburgh to attend university here. I graduated in English Literature and History before doing a Master's Degree in Journalism. Since then, I've been working freelance and trying to put together my first novel. On top of that, I've had a job at Kidzcare, helping out at numerous afterschool clubs around Edinburgh before moving into tutoring full-time.I have previously tutored in English, History, Modern Studies and Politics, taking multiple children from failing prelims to passing their final exams. While I don't have any formal teacher training, my experience...

Marc M
Expert English tutor
Hi there!
My name is Marc and I am 35 years old. I live in Edinburgh and work in the publishing and intellectual property rights industry.
I completed my Higher English back in 2008 and have since studied and used the subject extensively, through school, university and the workplace, briefly working as a journalist several years ago.
I understand how much of a difference some extra time and help spent on a subject outside of a classroom can make, having used a private tutor while at school to make sure I got the Maths grades I needed.
Sometimes, a new concept or an idea is explained...

enthusiastic and encouraging English tutor
As an English tutor I have tutored all ages, but I specifically tutor A Level Literature where I have a wide knowledge of the curriculum - I have tutored students across all the examination boards. I am a happy and enthusiastic mature person, who believes strongly in education and the confidence and opportunities that can be gained. My first aim is to encourage and praise pupils in their work - I believe enjoyment of the subject is the key to doing well. I personally enjoy the discussions, the debates. the sparks that come with a broader knowledge of the subject. And that "light bulb" moment that...
Our teenage daughter has had weekly 1:1 English sessions with Joanna for one year, whilst working towards an exam.
She has made great progress, with regards to both her skills and confidence.
Joanna has been an exceptionally good tutor, she has built a great working relationship over time.
She is competent and makes the sessions fun and enjoyable. Our daughter really looks forward to each tutorial.
Highly recommend, without reservation.

Ben D
Ben is an amazing tutor, he’s really got my step son who has Asperger’s to engage, lessons are planned and structured, post lesson feedback given which really helps as I can send it over to his mom after his lesson and know what he needs to revise. Definitely a worthwhile investment in my step sons future!

Holly E
Holly has been tutoring my son in English GCSE for the last half term. He has found the lessons very useful, working in a logical order through the different aspects of the curriculum. Holly is friendly, approachable and encouraging.
My Son has just had his mock exam results and has moved from just hitting an exam grade boundary to being 2 points off the next grade up. We are very pleased at his progress in a short space of time.

Mamun A
My son is really improving since starting lessons with Mamun. From the start of the lesson getting almost all questions wrong to by the end completely understanding it all. Tested him a few days later and he got almost every question right without any help at all he remembered all the punctuation in all questions, shocked how much he's improved from just one lesson on it! Mamun's teaching is brilliant and it really seems to stick in my sons head. Also my son is very fussy with his ASD/ADHD and is often open about his feelings towards people, especially new people most often than not he will say he doesn't like this person because of this or that, but he said he likes his tutor and wants to do more lessons which is brilliant. Mamun is always on time, very patient and explains thoroughly, he gives brilliant feedback afterwards too. Highly recommend this tutor and I'm glad I chose him rather than someone else.

Brilliant English tutors who you’ll really click with.
Our experienced tutors take the time to understand where each student needs to focus and their preferred way of learning. They make a measurable difference – 90% of all students improve by at least one grade.
My child is aiming for a competitive course at the University of Aberdeen. Can a tutor help with their Higher English?
Absolutely. Our tutors are experienced in helping students aiming for top Scottish universities. They can provide targeted support for the Higher English curriculum, improve essay writing skills, and even help your child articulate their ideas for their personal statement, strengthening their university application.
The schools in Aberdeen are very competitive. Can a tutor help my child keep up and feel less stressed?
Yes, this is one of the key benefits of one-to-one tuition. A tutor can create a calm, encouraging environment away from classroom pressures. By working at your child's pace and plugging any gaps in their understanding, they help build true confidence, which can make a huge difference to their stress levels and enjoyment of the subject.
How do I choose the right English tutor for my child?
You can browse tutor profiles to see their experience, qualifications, and read reviews from other parents. Many tutors also offer a short introductory chat to see if they are a good fit before you book. Think about your child's personality and learning style – finding someone they connect with is key.
What if my child doesn't click with their first tutor?
We know how important the right fit is. That’s why we have our first lesson guarantee. If you don't get on with your tutor, email our support team at support@tutorful.co.uk and we will cover your first session with a new tutor.
How much does an online English tutor in Aberdeen cost?
Prices vary depending on the tutor's experience and level of demand. You can see each tutor's hourly rate clearly on their profile, allowing you to find an experienced tutor who fits your budget. There are no hidden fees or contracts.
How does online tutoring actually work?
It's simple! All lessons take place in our purpose-built online classroom, which features video chat, an interactive whiteboard, and document sharing. All your child needs is a laptop or computer with a webcam, a microphone, and a stable internet connection.
Are all the tutors background-checked?
Yes, your child's safety is our top priority. Every single tutor on our platform has passed a background check. We are also very selective, accepting just 1 in 8 tutors who apply, so you can be sure your child is learning from the best.
How can a tutor help with exam technique for National 5s?
A tutor can provide invaluable support with exam technique. They can work with your child on time management, how to structure answers to gain maximum marks, and how to understand exactly what the question is asking for. They often use past papers to build confidence before the real exam.
My child has lost their confidence in English. How can a tutor help?
Confidence is key to learning. In a one-to-one setting, tutors can break down topics your child finds difficult into manageable steps. Celebrating small wins and providing constant, positive encouragement helps to rebuild their self-belief and rediscover an enjoyment for the subject.
How long will it take to see an improvement?
Every child learns at a different pace, but consistency is key. Many parents tell us they see a boost in their child's confidence after just a few sessions. Academic progress often follows as that confidence grows and knowledge gaps are filled.
Do you only offer academic subjects like English?
Not at all! While we support a huge range of academic subjects from primary school to university level, we also have tutors who can help your child learn a new skill or hobby. This includes everything from learning to play the guitar or piano to coding in Python.
What are the benefits of one-to-one tuition over group classes?
The biggest benefit is that the lesson is 100% focused on your child. Unlike in a group, the tutor can tailor the pace, style, and content of every single lesson to your child's specific needs and goals, ensuring they get the exact support they require.
