Long term support from KS1 to A Level English Language English
Hi. My name is Michelle and I'm a freelance writer and online English tutor. I also work casually as a Cover Supervisor, providing emergency teacher cover in high schools all over Chester and the surrounding area. I graduated in 2018, as a mature student, with a first-class English Literature degree and am available for hire as a private English tutor and mentor. I have lots of experience preparing students for 7+, 11+, GCSE, A Level, IELTS and all common entrance English exams. As the parent of two children myself (ages twelve and sixteen), I understand first-hand how difficult it can be trying...
Leigh worked with our teenage son to prepare for his English Language iGCSE. With only a short time before the exam, they quickly developed a constructive rapport. Leigh was quickly able to assess where our son ‘was at’ in terms of his readiness for that exam. Over just a few sessions, analysis and writing skills were imparted and developed that meant our son felt prepared. Moreover, our son so enjoyed the way Leigh worked and his obvious passion for and skills in language analysis, that he chose to continue language analysis sessions just for the fun of it once the exam was over. A comment our son has made more than once after a session is, ‘I just love learning!’ The exam was passed really well – the outcome we hoped would be possible – but more significantly, we are grateful for Leigh’s ability to really draw out and develop our son’s enjoyment of the English language.

Ihsanur R
Last Year I did not do well in English Language in which I had a Grade 3. With my November resits fast approaching I felt very privileged to have Ihsanur as my tutor. He was able to present lessons in a concise way which helped me understand what went well and what I needed to improve on.
After the November resits I managed to obtain a Grade 4 in English Language AQA. I would really recommend him for those taking the GCSE 2026 because he is committed and dedicated in order to achieve academic potential with pupils. Thanks again Ihsanur for the hard work you do.

Flora I
Flora has been helping Isla prepare for her English Literature and English Language GCSE exams. From the first lesson, Flora “clicked” with Isla and quickly understood her needs. She made Isla feel comfortable and pinpointed areas for development and was so supportive. Isla felt at ease and could ask questions knowing that the necessary time would be taken to help her understand. Flora was incredibly accommodating, adjusting lesson times and dates as needed. She was also very responsive to messages and promptly returned marked work, going above and beyond to support us. Isla’s work was annotated and marked, providing valuable feedback and areas for future focus, which has been invaluable. Flora’s passion for the subject shone through, thank you so much Flora!

Brilliant English Language tutors who you’ll really click with.
Our experienced tutors take the time to understand where each student needs to focus and their preferred way of learning. They make a measurable difference – 90% of all students improve by at least one grade.
My child is aiming for a competitive sixth form like Tapton or Silverdale. Can a tutor focus specifically on hitting a grade 7 or higher in GCSE English Language?
Absolutely. This is a common goal for many Sheffield families we work with. Our tutors are experienced in helping students bridge the gap between a good grade and a top one. They can identify specific areas for improvement, from exam technique to analytical skills, to help your child meet the entry requirements for their desired A-Level courses.
With the University of Sheffield nearby, we're very aware of academic standards. Do your online tutors understand what's needed for that next step?
Yes, many of our tutors are graduates from top UK universities, including those in the Russell Group. They understand the level of critical thinking and written communication required for higher education. They can help your child develop these skills early, giving them a strong foundation not just for A-Levels, but for future university success.
Is online tutoring as effective as meeting a tutor in person?
We find it's even more effective for many families. Online lessons use interactive tools like digital whiteboards, and sessions can be recorded for revision. Crucially, it gives your child in Sheffield access to the best subject specialists from across the UK, not just whoever is local. Plus, the convenience of learning from home can't be beaten!
What if my child doesn't click with the first tutor we try?
Finding the right personality match is so important, and we want you to be completely happy. If the first session isn't the perfect fit, just email our support team at support@tutorful.co.uk, and we will cover the cost of your first lesson with a new tutor. It's our 'First Lesson Guarantee'.
How do you ensure your English Language tutors are high quality?
We have a rigorous selection process and only accept 1 in 8 tutors who apply. Every tutor is background-checked, interviewed, and has proven subject expertise. We focus on finding tutors who are not only knowledgeable but also brilliant, inspiring communicators.
My child loves creative writing but struggles with the analytical side of English. Do you offer tutoring for more than just exam prep?
Definitely! Whilst we're experts in exam preparation, our tutors can also nurture a passion for subjects. We have tutors who specialise in creative writing, public speaking, and even learning musical instruments or coding. Tutoring is about building confidence and skills in any area your child is interested in.
How much do online English Language lessons typically cost?
Prices vary depending on the tutor's experience and qualifications. You can filter tutors by price when you search on our website to find a highly-rated tutor who fits your family's budget perfectly.
My child's confidence in English is very low. How does a tutor help with that?
This is at the heart of what we do. A great tutor creates a safe, encouraging space where your child isn't afraid to ask questions or make mistakes. By breaking down topics and celebrating small wins, they rebuild confidence step by step, which often has a huge impact on their results.
Can we get help with specific parts of the English Language GCSE, like the creative writing component?
Yes, absolutely. The beauty of one-to-one tutoring is that it's completely tailored. Your child and their tutor can spend entire sessions focusing specifically on mastering persuasive writing, narrative structure, or analysing unseen texts—whatever they need most.
We have a really busy schedule with after-school clubs. How flexible is online tutoring?
Extremely flexible. You can view each tutor's availability on their profile and book sessions for evenings, weekends, or whenever suits your family's routine. This is one of the biggest benefits for busy families in Sheffield.
How long is a typical tutoring session?
Most sessions are one hour long, as this is usually the optimal time to cover a topic in depth without losing focus. However, you can arrange different session lengths directly with your chosen tutor to suit your child's needs.
What technology do we need for an online lesson?
It's very simple. All you need is a laptop, tablet, or computer with a webcam, a microphone, and a stable internet connection. Our online classroom is easy to use and works directly in your web browser, so there's no complex software to install.
