Carole G
Professional English Language tutor
Hi, my name is Carole. I worked as a primary school teacher for 19 years and I have been tutoring children from reception to year 8, mainly online, since February 2020. I have worked with many children, helping them to achieve success in SATs, school entrance exams or to gain increased confidence and enjoyment of their subjects in school. I had some recent feedback from a parent, stating that their child had "gone from being scared of maths (and trying to hide it by saying maths is boring) to loving it!" Some of my current students have worked with me for several years, continuing after primary...

Ihsanur R
Last Year I did not do well in English Language in which I had a Grade 3. With my November resits fast approaching I felt very privileged to have Ihsanur as my tutor. He was able to present lessons in a concise way which helped me understand what went well and what I needed to improve on.
After the November resits I managed to obtain a Grade 4 in English Language AQA. I would really recommend him for those taking the GCSE 2026 because he is committed and dedicated in order to achieve academic potential with pupils. Thanks again Ihsanur for the hard work you do.

Flora I
Flora has been helping Isla prepare for her English Literature and English Language GCSE exams. From the first lesson, Flora “clicked” with Isla and quickly understood her needs. She made Isla feel comfortable and pinpointed areas for development and was so supportive. Isla felt at ease and could ask questions knowing that the necessary time would be taken to help her understand. Flora was incredibly accommodating, adjusting lesson times and dates as needed. She was also very responsive to messages and promptly returned marked work, going above and beyond to support us. Isla’s work was annotated and marked, providing valuable feedback and areas for future focus, which has been invaluable. Flora’s passion for the subject shone through, thank you so much Flora!

It’s clear Jessica has a strong background and is truly in the right profession—she knows exactly what’s needed and structures each lesson to cover any gaps. She explains everything clearly, focuses on exam technique, and is patient and supportive. Our son enjoys the lessons and already feels more confident. We’re planning to continue and are very glad to have Jessica as his tutor. We highly recommend her!

Brilliant English Language tutors who you’ll really click with.
Our experienced tutors take the time to understand where each student needs to focus and their preferred way of learning. They make a measurable difference – 90% of all students improve by at least one grade.
My child is aiming for a top GCSE grade for a competitive Derby sixth form. Can a tutor help?
Absolutely. This is a common goal for parents we support. Our tutors are experienced in helping students aim for those crucial 6s, 7s and above. They can focus specifically on the exam board your child's school uses, strengthening essay technique and analytical skills to help their application stand out for places like Littleover or Chellaston Academy.
How can tutoring strengthen my child's future university application?
Strong communication and analytical skills are vital for any university application. A tutor can help your child articulate their ideas with clarity and confidence, which is invaluable when writing personal statements for institutions like the University of Derby. They build the core skills that admissions tutors look for, whatever the chosen subject.
Is online tutoring as effective as in-person for English Language?
Yes, and many families find it even more effective. Online sessions use interactive tools like digital whiteboards to analyse texts together in real-time. The biggest advantage is access; your child in Derby can connect with a top English specialist from across the UK, not just whoever lives nearby, ensuring they get the very best support.
What happens if my child and their first tutor don't quite click?
It's really important that your child feels comfortable with their tutor. We have a first lesson guarantee so you can find the perfect match. If it's not quite right for any reason, just email our support team at support@tutorful.co.uk and we will cover the cost of your first session with a new tutor.
How do you ensure your tutors are high quality?
We're very selective because we know how much trust you're placing in us. We accept just 1 in 8 tutors who apply. Every tutor is interviewed, background-checked, and has proven subject expertise, so you can be sure your child is learning from a true professional.
Can a tutor help with specific parts of the English Language curriculum?
Of course. Whether it's mastering persuasive writing, analysing unseen fiction, or preparing for the spoken language component, our tutors tailor their lessons. They can create a specific plan to target any areas where your child needs a little extra support and confidence.
How much do online English Language tutors cost for learners in Derby?
Our tutors set their own hourly rates, typically starting from around £20 per hour. Prices vary based on the tutor's experience and level of study. You can easily filter by price on our site to find a brilliant tutor who fits your budget.
How many sessions will my child need?
This is completely unique to each child. Some students need a short burst of sessions to prepare for an exam, whilst others benefit from weekly support throughout the school year to build their skills steadily. You can discuss your child's goals with your chosen tutor to create a plan that works for them.
What technology do we need for online lessons?
It's very simple. All your child needs is a laptop or computer with a webcam, a microphone, and a stable internet connection. Our purpose-built online classroom has all the tools they'll need, like an interactive whiteboard, built right in.
Do you offer tutoring for subjects other than English Language?
Yes, we do! We have expert tutors across more than 300 subjects, from core academic subjects like maths and science to languages, coding, music, and even life skills. Whatever your child is passionate about or needs help with, we're here to support them.
Can we find a tutor who specialises in a particular exam board, like AQA or Edexcel?
Definitely. Many of our tutors specialise in specific exam boards and have an in-depth understanding of the syllabus and assessment criteria. You can check a tutor's profile for their areas of expertise or use our search filters to find the right match for your child's needs.
How does scheduling work with a busy family life?
Flexibility is one of the biggest benefits of online tutoring. You can view each tutor's availability on their profile and book session times that fit around school, clubs, and family commitments. It's designed to make getting support as stress-free as possible.
