Leigh H
Leigh worked with our teenage son to prepare for his English Language iGCSE. With only a short time before the exam, they quickly developed a constructive rapport. Leigh was quickly able to assess where our son ‘was at’ in terms of his readiness for that exam. Over just a few sessions, analysis and writing skills were imparted and developed that meant our son felt prepared. Moreover, our son so enjoyed the way Leigh worked and his obvious passion for and skills in language analysis, that he chose to continue language analysis sessions just for the fun of it once the exam was over. A comment our son has made more than once after a session is, ‘I just love learning!’ The exam was passed really well – the outcome we hoped would be possible – but more significantly, we are grateful for Leigh’s ability to really draw out and develop our son’s enjoyment of the English language.

Ihsanur R
Last Year I did not do well in English Language in which I had a Grade 3. With my November resits fast approaching I felt very privileged to have Ihsanur as my tutor. He was able to present lessons in a concise way which helped me understand what went well and what I needed to improve on.
After the November resits I managed to obtain a Grade 4 in English Language AQA. I would really recommend him for those taking the GCSE 2026 because he is committed and dedicated in order to achieve academic potential with pupils. Thanks again Ihsanur for the hard work you do.

Flora I
Flora has been helping Isla prepare for her English Literature and English Language GCSE exams. From the first lesson, Flora “clicked” with Isla and quickly understood her needs. She made Isla feel comfortable and pinpointed areas for development and was so supportive. Isla felt at ease and could ask questions knowing that the necessary time would be taken to help her understand. Flora was incredibly accommodating, adjusting lesson times and dates as needed. She was also very responsive to messages and promptly returned marked work, going above and beyond to support us. Isla’s work was annotated and marked, providing valuable feedback and areas for future focus, which has been invaluable. Flora’s passion for the subject shone through, thank you so much Flora!

Brilliant English Language tutors who you’ll really click with.
Our experienced tutors take the time to understand where each student needs to focus and their preferred way of learning. They make a measurable difference – 90% of all students improve by at least one grade.
How can an online tutor understand the specific curriculum my child is following in their Croydon school?
Our tutors are experts in the UK national curriculum, including specifications for exam boards like AQA, Edexcel, and OCR used in schools across Croydon. During your first session, the tutor will chat with your child about their current schoolwork, what they find challenging, and what their goals are. This ensures lessons are perfectly aligned with what they're learning in class, providing targeted support where it's needed most.
Is online English tutoring as effective as meeting a tutor in person?
Absolutely. Many parents tell us it's even better! Online tutoring offers the same dedicated, one-to-one focus but with added benefits. Your child can learn from the comfort of home in Croydon, using interactive tools like digital whiteboards. Plus, you're not limited to tutors nearby; you can connect with the perfect English specialist from anywhere in the UK, ensuring your child gets the very best support.
My child is preparing for grammar school entrance exams in the Sutton/Croydon area. Can a tutor help?
Yes, we have many tutors experienced in preparing students for 11+ and specific grammar school entrance exams. They can help your child build the necessary verbal reasoning and English comprehension skills, as well as develop exam technique and confidence. Just use the filters to find tutors with specific 11+ experience.
What happens if we don't click with the first English Language tutor we try?
Finding the right personality match is crucial, and we want you to be completely happy. If for any reason the first lesson isn't a perfect fit, please email our support team at support@tutorful.co.uk. We will happily cover the cost of your first session with a new tutor to ensure you find the right person for your child.
How do you ensure your tutors are qualified and safe?
Your child's safety and the quality of their education are our top priorities. We have a rigorous selection process, and only 1 in 8 tutors who apply are accepted. Every tutor is background-checked, has their ID and qualifications verified, and undergoes a professional interview to ensure they have the expertise to help your child thrive.
My child loves creative writing but struggles with the analytical side of English. Can we find a specialist?
Of course. That's a huge benefit of our platform. You can browse tutor profiles to find someone who not only has experience with the analytical side of the curriculum but also shares a passion for creative writing. They can use your child's strength in one area to build their confidence and skills in another.
What technology do we need for online lessons?
It's very simple. All you need is a laptop or computer with a webcam, a microphone, and a stable internet connection. Our online classroom is built into our platform, so there's no complex software to download. It's designed to be intuitive and easy to use for students of all ages.
How much do online English tutors for students in Croydon cost?
Our tutors set their own hourly rates, typically starting from around £20 per hour. Prices vary based on the tutor's experience and the level of study (e.g., Primary, GCSE, A-Level). You can see each tutor's price clearly on their profile, allowing you to find excellent support that fits your family's budget.
How long does it take to see a change in my child's confidence?
Every child is different, but many parents notice a shift quite quickly. The biggest change often comes from your child feeling understood and supported. When they have a safe space to ask questions without fear of judgement, their self-belief can grow week by week. The academic progress naturally follows from there.
Can we get help with specific things like GCSE coursework or A-Level text analysis?
Yes, absolutely. Our tutors can provide targeted support for specific assignments, whether it's planning GCSE coursework, preparing for an oral presentation, or getting to grips with a complex A-Level text. You can find tutors with specific experience in these areas by checking their profiles.
Beyond English, can my child get help with other subjects like drama or public speaking?
Yes! We offer tutoring in over 300 subjects. Many skills learnt in English Language, like analysis and communication, are transferable. We have specialist tutors who can help with drama, public speaking, media studies, and many other subjects to help your child build a broad and versatile skill set.
Can we book lessons at different times each week?
Yes, flexibility is a key benefit. You're not tied to the same slot every week unless you want to be. You can schedule lessons around your family's changing commitments, whether it's after-school clubs, holidays, or busy work periods. Just arrange times directly with your tutor.
