Manuel M

Dyspraxia tutor

I first dipped into Spanish in 2017 using the coffee break Spanish series. At the time, I was a casual learner where I picked up a few introductory phrases and vocabulary. However, it was clear after a few visits to Spain that I wasn’t making the progress I wanted. I tried a tutor for the first time in 2018 but found that I was dictating the lesson schedule and it just wasn’t the structure that worked for me - after all, I didn’t know the language! I stopped doing lessons and felt like I would never get to my goal of being a confident intermediate-level speaker. At the start of lockdown, something clicked and I decided to commit fully to learning the language. I made good progress in learning A1 & A2 grammar, vocab and phrases as an independent learner. When I went to Spain in July 2020 I felt more confident. However, I felt I was still missing the structure to my learning that I needed and lacked the ability to communicate effectively. I’d been using Babbel, which was great as an introductory tool, but I realised I’d exhausted its value. I wasn’t assimilating the language and I just felt I wasn’t making enough progress. That’s when I realised I needed to try another tutor and how glad I am that I found Manuel! I’ve been learning with him since July 2020 and have progressed from a weak A2 level towards an intermediate level (B1) to the point where I feel that reaching my goal of a strong B2 level actually feels attainable. The lessons have integrated listening, reading and speaking exercises and we often get a good opportunity to speak in the language. This gives me the immersion I need. After over 30 lessons, I can truly say that Manuel is a brilliant teacher and I couldn’t recommend him more highly! I have to say that one of my favourite quirks of our lessons has been exploring Spanish music artists; allowing me to immerse myself further in Spanish culture. I’m looking forward to more lessons with Manuel and continuing my Spanish language journey over the months ahead! Gracias, Manuel!
