Q: How do you help us find the right Design and Technology tutor?

You don't need to sift through hundreds of profiles. Instead, you answer a few short questions about your child – their subject level, what they're finding difficult in Design and Technology, and how they learn best. Our system then uses this information to surface a small number of genuinely well-suited tutors, making it simple to find someone who fits your child's needs.

Q: What is the online classroom like for Design and Technology?

It's built specifically for engaging learning, much more than a standard video call. Your child and their Design and Technology tutor use a shared interactive whiteboard for sketching ideas, annotating diagrams, and collaborating on design concepts in real-time. They can share resources, use virtual tools for CAD or technical drawing, and every session is recorded, so your child can revisit challenging topics or design steps whenever they need to.

Question 5

What if the first Design and Technology session isn't a good fit?

Accepted Answer

We want to ensure your child connects with the right tutor. If, for any reason, the first Design and Technology session doesn't feel like the right match, simply email support@tutorful.co.uk. We will happily cover your first session with a new tutor, helping you find that perfect fit without any extra cost.

Question 6

Can Tutorful help with different Design and Technology specialisms like textiles or product design?

Accepted Answer

Yes, our network of Design and Technology tutors covers a broad range of specialisms. Whether your child needs help with specific materials, manufacturing processes, graphic design, systems and control, or even coursework for a particular area like textiles, we can connect them with a tutor who has expertise in that field.

Question 7

How flexible are the online Design and Technology sessions?

Accepted Answer

Online sessions are incredibly flexible. Tutors offer a wide range of availability, meaning you can easily fit Design and Technology lessons around school, extracurricular activities, and family life in Newcastle. You can arrange sessions for after school, evenings, or weekends, whatever works best for your child's routine.

Question 8

What qualifications do your Design and Technology tutors have?

Accepted Answer

We take great care in selecting our tutors. They are all subject matter experts, many with teaching qualifications or extensive professional experience in Design and Technology. We only accept about 1 in 8 applicants, ensuring a high standard of knowledge and teaching ability. Their profiles detail their specific qualifications and experience.

Question 9

My child is shy about asking for help. How can a tutor support them?

Accepted Answer

Our tutors are skilled at building rapport and creating a supportive, non-judgemental environment. In a one-to-one setting, shy children often feel more comfortable asking questions and making mistakes than they might in a classroom. The tutor can adapt their approach to suit your child's personality, gently encouraging participation and building their confidence session by session.

Question 10

What age or academic level do you cover for Design and Technology?

Accepted Answer

We offer Design and Technology tutoring primarily for GCSE and A-level students, which is often when specialist support becomes most beneficial. We also have tutors who can assist with Key Stage 3 if your child needs to build foundational skills, or even university-level design projects for more advanced learners.

Question 11

How quickly can we get started with a Design and Technology tutor?

Accepted Answer

Getting started is straightforward. Once you've answered our few questions, we can often present you with suitable tutor matches very quickly. You can then typically arrange an introductory session within a few days, depending on your and the tutor's availability. Many parents find they can have their child's first lesson within a week of starting the process.

Question 12

Is online tutoring as effective as in-person for Design and Technology?

Accepted Answer

Yes, for Design and Technology, online tutoring is highly effective and often more beneficial. The interactive classroom tools allow for dynamic demonstrations of design principles, collaborative sketching, and shared project work that mimics real-world design processes. Plus, the convenience of learning from home in Newcastle means less disruption and more consistent attendance, which significantly aids progress.
