Hello, my name is Ellena and I am a flautist, singer and teacher based in the Midlands. I currently teach at a secondary school in Warwick, where I teach both individual peripatetic flute, vocal, and keyboard lessons. I love performing music. This is what led me to this career path, hoping to inspire others to take up music performance as I did. I voluntarily run a woodwind ensemble and instrumental group on a weekly basis at the school as I feel performing in ensembles is so important to our enjoyment of music, and regularly practise duets with my students for this reason.
I am interested in a variety of music styles, and although specialising in classical music, also take part in a number of jazz and contemporary music ensembles and projects. I feel it is important to perform a wide range of styles. My key focus is always on the enjoyment of music, and that every student learns differently. Catering to this is the most important thing a teacher can do to ensure every student enjoys their learning experience.
I have performed in numerous concerts in the UK, Europe and the USA. At a young age, I performed as a soloist and chamber ensemble musician in the concert series, ‘Classics by Candlelight’ (2005-2010) alongside Nicholas Daniels and Joy Farrell in my hometown in Cambridgeshire. Other concerts included shared recitals with the pianist Francesco Attesti, as well as performing as the featured soloist in 2012 with the International Youth Symphony Orchestra in San Diego. At this time I was also chosen for an internship at the Sunriver Music Festival in Oregon, where I worked closely with the orchestra and events staff. I was also chosen to represent Birmingham Conservatoire at the Le Cote Flute Festival in Switzerland, October 2016. This festival selects one flautist from each Conservatoire, and here I took part in masterclasses with Marc-Andre Fournel, Sylvia Carredu, Trevor Wye and Emily Beynon.
I have performed as principal flautist in CBSO Youth Orchestra and CBSO Youth Academy, Birmingham Conservatoire Symphony Orchestra, Thallein Ensemble, Birmingham Conservatoire Jazz Orchestra, and Shrewsbury Cantata. I have also played in orchestras such as the New Cambridge Symphony Orchestra and British Saints Symphony Choir and Orchestra. I was chosen to take part in the CBSO scheme in 2015, where I worked alongside players in the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, observing rehearsals and interacting with the musicians. I performed in venues including Town Hall and Symphony Hall Birmingham, LSO St Luke's, Balboa Park Organ Pavillion San Diego, Escondido Performing Arts Centre California, and at the Summerfest in La Jolla, California.
I began my musical studies under the tuition of Sarah O'Flynn and then went on to study at the Junior Department of Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance in 2010 with a full scholarship.
I am a first class honours graduate student of Birmingham Conservatoire, where I studied with Jonathan Rimmer (flute) and Andrew Lane (piccolo). I received for three consecutive years a scholarship from the EMI Bursary Fund.
My masterclasses include those with; Robert Winn, Susan Milan, Karen Jones, Diane Clarke, Anthony Robb, Marie-Christine Zupanic, James Galway, Emily Beynon, Marc-Andre Fournel, Trevor Wye and Silvia Carredu.
Ellena is both a dedicated and enthusiastic teacher. She has helped my daughter greatly improve her flute playing technique and confidence. Ellena has been extremely supportive and I am certain that her passion for teaching will continue in her future lessons. I would recommend her to any young inspiring musicians.
