Understanding Coordinates

How does your phone know where you are on a map? How do characters move in video games? It’s all thanks to the Cartesian coordinate system, which lets us pinpoint the exact location of anything using just a couple of numbers.

The Core Concepts

The Axes and the Origin

The system uses two number lines that cross at a central point called the origin. The horizontal line is the x-axis and the vertical line is the y-axis.

A coordinate pair $(x, y)$ gives a point’s exact position. Remember: “Across the hall, then up the stairs!” — move along the x-axis first, then the y-axis.

The Four Quadrants

The axes divide the plane into four sections called quadrants, numbered anti-clockwise starting from the top right.

  • Quadrant I: $(+, +)$ — right and up
  • Quadrant II: $(-, +)$ — left and up
  • Quadrant III: $(-, -)$ — left and down
  • Quadrant IV: $(+, -)$ — right and down

Worked Examples

Let’s plot six points. Start at the origin, move along the x-axis first, then the y-axis.

Plotting A (3, 2)

Move 3 right, then 2 up.

Plotting B (−4, 1)

Move 4 left, then 1 up.

Plotting C (−2, −3)

Move 2 left, then 3 down.

Reading D (1, −4)

1 right, 4 down → $(1, -4)$.

Reading E (−3, 3)

3 left, 3 up → $(-3, 3)$.

Reading F (2, −2)

2 right, 2 down → $(2, -2)$.

🤔 Common Misunderstandings

  • Swapping x and y: The most common mistake — plotting $(2, 3)$ as $(3, 2)$. Always: x first, then y.
  • Incorrect signs: Forgetting that moving left is negative $x$ and moving down is negative $y$.
  • Misreading the scale: Always check whether grid lines count in 1s, 2s, or 5s.

📝 Common Exam Mistakes

  • Failing to label points: If the question asks you to plot point ‘A’, label it clearly.
  • Faint plotting: Use a clear dot or small cross the examiner can easily see.
  • Plotting between grid lines: Points should sit on the intersection of grid lines unless decimals are involved.
