This class is aimed at year 9 pupils who want to improve their skills with algebra. We will solve easier and harder equations, and consider the similarities and differences with rearranging formulae. This class is super interactive and students will be constantly engaged!
60 mins
In this session we will begin to solve equations - a skill that will follow students throughout their mathematical lives. We will investigate the different ways we can conceptualise solving equations - so that students have something clear in their minds, rather than just a procedure. We will use online manipulatives to keep students engaged.
60 mins
In this session we will use skills from the last session to solve equations with unknowns on both sides, including with brackets. Students can start to make self-conscious decisions about which methods work best for them. They will solve many different kinds of equations, and will solve problems using these skills.
60 mins
We will discuss the difference between equations and formulae, and learn to identify them by sight and usage. Students will once again use online manipulatives to understand how and why we rearrange formulae, rather than merely learning a procedure. They will discover their favourite methods for rearranging formulae from among many.
60 mins
In this final session students will draw upon skills from sessions 2 and 3 to begin to rearrange more complex formulae - including with squaring and brackets. Students will consider the different ways we can rearrange formulae to come to the same correct solution. Finally, students will confront GCSE exam style questions.
