In this first session, students will discover Pythagoras’ Theorem for themselves - they will gain a sense of achievement in their discovery and understand the ‘whys’ not the ‘hows’ of this important (and frequently seen on exams) mathematical topic. These sessions are suitable for those who have or have not previously studied Pythagoras.
Having discovered Pythagoras’ theorem, students will put this into practice to find missing sides in right-angled triangles. Importantly, they will learn when questions are asking them to use Pythagoras’ Theorem, and to find what unknown value. Once again, the focus will be on deeper understanding, leading to procedural accuracy.
Students will now have fluency in finding the shorter side in right-angled triangles using Pythagoras’ Theorem, in this next session, they will become fluent in using the theorem to find the shorter sides. Importantly, they will learn to identify what exam questions are asking of them, and learn where to pick up marks in final exams.
Finally, we will bring together all the skills students have learnt in previous sessions to use Pythagoras’ Theorem in problem solving situations, including: worded problems, with different units of measurement, and using the theorem in other shapes.
