This class is aimed at year 7 pupils who want to improve their skills with algebra. We will discover algebraic notation and its uses; algebraic substitutions; and solving equations. This class is super interactive and students will be constantly engaged!
Wednesday 16th February at 5:00 PM 60 mins
In this session we will be introduced to algebra - why on earth do mathematicians use letters? Join to find out! Students will be introduced to many different online manipulatives we can use to bolster our understanding of algebra - most importantly online algebra tiles.
Wednesday 23rd February at 5:00 PM 60 mins
In this session we will see how substitutions into algebraic expressions work - and, most importantly, why we use them. We will link everyday problems to algebraic substitutions to make this session highly useful and grounded for students. We will use the online manipulatives from session 1 to keep students engaged and in charge of their learning.
Wednesday 2nd March at 5:00 PM 60 mins
In this session we will begin to solve equations - a skill that will follow them throughout their mathematical lives. We will investigate the different ways we can conceptualise solving equations - so that students have something clear in their minds, rather than just a procedure. We will use the online manipulatives from session 1 to keep students
Wednesday 9th March at 5:00 PM 60 mins
In this final session we will bring together all our skills to solve two step equations. By this point students will have many skills they can draw on - and so can start to make self-conscious decisions about which methods work best for them. They will solve many different kinds of two step equations, and will solve problems using these skills.
