In Poetry Club, members will learn a range of poetic styles, structures, themes & rhyme schemes through the work of poets such as Roger McGough, Maya Angelou, Michael Rosen, Carol Ann Duffy, Benjamin Zephaniah and any poems that they would like to bring to class. Each student will also produce poems of their own, inspired by the work of these greats. This club is great for any student wishing to aid their transition from primary to secondary education as it will give them the tools and techniques they need to talk about meaning in a detailed and considered way, it’ll also be really good fun!
Structure: This session will introduce students to the different structures with which a poem can be formed. From rhyming couplets to haikus, to quatrains, students will read and write a range of poems….we’ll even tackle a sonnet or two!
Rhyme and Rhythm: once again, students will be shown a range of poetry that helps them to understand the difference between and how to identify rhyme and rhythm in a poem. Students will practice by writing their own rhyming poems.
Themes: this session will look at how different poets tackle the same themes and how their approaches are similar or different. Students will produce their own poem based on the theme. By the end of our time together, students will have produced a range of poems and gained a wealth of knowledge about structure, language and themes.
