Over 5 weeks, you will learn how your favourite films originally began on the page. This course will include film clips and scene analysis, as well as script writing tools and techniques which will provide you with the basic skills to begin writing your own scripts.

From Page to Screen: Students will learn about how a script is formatted on the page, the common acronyms used in scriptwriting and the best software to use. We will watch scenes from the opening of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring and Pixar’s Wall-E, comparing the final product to the script version.

Developing Storylines: We will consider traditional and non-traditional storytelling techniques. We will examine the three-act story structure and review famous examples of this. Students will be introduced to Blake Snyder’s ‘Save the Cat’ method for screenwriting as well as the concept of ‘MacGuffins’ famously utilised by Alfred Hitchcock.

Developing Characters: We will consider what makes a good character and how to write a strong character outline. We will learn about character archetypes in film and character development. We will examine some famous familiar characters such as James bond, Harry Potter and the Joker, considering how a good character can drive a script.

Writing dialogue and ‘Show, don’t tell’: How do we write realistic, effective, and memorable dialogue? We will examine how dialogue should be structured and how to include things such as voiceovers, parenthesis information, overlapping dialogue and interruptions. We will discuss the notion of ‘Show, not tell’ in writing with movie examples.

Writing action: What do action scenes look like on paper? How do we pace a car chase or a fight scene? We will consider how a script is a ‘skeleton’ for a whole production. We will look at famous action scenes from films such as Jurassic Park and Baby Driver, comparing the scenes to the script.
