This half-term course offers a close analysis of key moments in Shakespeare’s Macbeth. Each day is designed, like the first Macbeth class, to help students approach themes in detail and carefully consider the importance of context, staging, props and audiences in key moments of this intense play.

This extract occurs while King Duncan hears news of the battle against the ‘merciless MacDonald’, revealing the bravery and courage of his warriors. We will read the extract aloud before considering Shakespeare’s use of punctuation, lines, staging, figurative language and foreboding.

Act 2 Scene 3 shows Macduff’s horrified discovery of Duncan’s corpse, the Macbeth couple’s deceitful scheme begin, and the social disorder that follows unjust regicide. We will consider the significance of figurative language and context, along with the importance of stage directions and tone of voice.

Banquo begins Act 3 by voicing his suspicions of his friend Macbeth. He is the first of many to question Macbeth’s public character, suspecting him capable of disloyalty and dishonour. We will consider the significance of duplicity, public reputations and identify further links to elsewhere in the play.

By Act 4 Scene 1 the witches’ power over Macbeth is apparent. This extract will focus on the witches’ characterisations and upon Jacobean attitudes towards witchcraft. It will also encourage students to consider how stage directions, songs, gesture, and meter impacts both meaning and performance.

This scene brings into fresh focus both Macbeth’s relationship with his wife and his own masculinity. Despite the mistakes that they have made as a married couple, Macbeth displays masculine courage in preparing for the battle ahead while Lady Macbeth succumbs to a mysterious death offstage.
