This class offers context for J. B. Priestley’s 1945 play An Inspector Calls. It provides a useful visual timeline of events between 1912 - 1945 that relate to the play (and key characters). Students will also follow a chronological context presentation, considering staging and audience receptions.

We will cover: Priestley’s biography; the class system of pre- and post-WW1 Britain; established gender norms; the emergence of key political movements and the impact of strikes since 1912; changes in technology and culture since 1945; the Great Depression; and the aftermath of WW2.
