11+ English Reading Skills: How to Excel in Comprehension - Daily
Using real past papers, this class will cover everything students need to know to excel in the comprehension section of the 11+. The sessions will cover multiple choice, full sentence and essay style answers so that students are prepared for all eventualities and able to tackle any style of paper.

Class content
Session 1
60 mins
Reading skills: the basics. The first session will provide strategies for reading tactically and accurately as well as explaining the 6 different skills that all 11+ comprehension papers are testing for, so that students feel confident and comfortable in tackling a range of papers.
Session 2
60 mins
Answering in full sentences: in this session we will use real past papers to practice the skill of answering accurately and in full sentences. Students will be taught how to use the language of the question to present their ideas clearly and concisely.
Session 3
60 mins
Multiple choice papers. Whilst these papers may appear more straight-forward in theory, in practice students are often caught out by the wording of both the questions and the answers. This session will ensure that students are aware of the pitfalls of this style of paper and how to avoid them through careful reading.
Session 4
60 mins
Tackling longer answers. This session will look at those questions which require students to answer in greater detail and ensure that they develop their responses fully to answer those questions properly. I will provide strategies for structuring analytical paragraphs that allow the students to talk about language and its effect.
Session 5
60 mins
Identifying literary devices and discussing their effect: perhaps the most challenging aspect of the comprehension paper, this final session will guide students through how to analyse and discuss the effects of language upon a reader.
