Post-16 Pathways

University and apprenticeships each have their own way of doing things. September matters for both, but what it means for your child depends on which path they’re thinking about.

If your child is weighing up both university and apprenticeships, the tricky part often isn’t picking one over the other. It’s that the applications work so differently. UCAS has set deadlines everyone sticks to. Apprenticeships are posted by employers whenever they’re ready, with no single calendar. It’s easy to miss something good just because you didn’t know when to look.

The Core Difference

Two Systems, Two Sets of Rules

🎓 University (UCAS)
  • Fixed national deadlines: everyone applying for the same year works to the same dates
  • Equal consideration: applying in September is no better or worse than applying right before the deadline
  • Up to 5 choices submitted through one central application
  • Offers typically arrive months later, often conditional on final exam grades
🛠️ Apprenticeships
  • No national cycle or fixed deadline: each vacancy sets its own closing date
  • Rolling and often first-come, first-served: popular vacancies can close just days or weeks after being posted
  • Apply to individual vacancies as they’re advertised, not a single combined form
  • Offers can come through quickly, sometimes just weeks after you apply
You can genuinely do both

Applying for an apprenticeship and university at the same time is completely standard practice — the two systems don’t conflict, and plenty of students keep both options open until a firm offer comes in from either side.

Where September Actually Matters

The Dates to Have on the Calendar

DateWhat it means
1 September 2026 UCAS opens for submission of 2027-entry university applications.
September–November 2026 This is when most big employers start putting up degree and higher apprenticeship roles for a September 2027 start. Banks, engineering firms, law firms and other large companies usually post their vacancies around now.
Rolling, year-round New apprenticeship vacancies pop up all year on the government’s Find an Apprenticeship service. It’s not just about September; you can spot new roles any time.
15 October 2026, 18:00 UCAS deadline for Oxford, Cambridge, Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Science.
13 January 2027, 18:00 UCAS equal consideration deadline for the vast majority of other university courses.
The real risk with apprenticeships

With apprenticeships, there’s no guarantee every application gets the same look. Some vacancies close as soon as they’re filled, sometimes just days after going live. So waiting until the deadline can mean missing out. It’s not like UCAS, where everyone gets a fair shot up to the cut-off.

What to Actually Do This Month

A September Action List for Either Path

  • Set up vacancy alerts on the Find an Apprenticeship service for relevant sectors, so new postings don’t get missed between checks
  • Check target employers’ own careers pages directly — some large employers post to their own site slightly ahead of, or instead of, the government portal
  • Get the UCAS application moving in parallel if university is still genuinely on the table — there’s no need to choose between the two paths this early
  • Tailor each apprenticeship application individually — unlike a UCAS personal statement written once for five choices, apprenticeship applications are usually employer-specific and shouldn’t be recycled word for word
  • Prepare for assessment centres and interviews early for competitive apprenticeship schemes — many move from application to interview far faster than university offers do

Support for whichever path — or both

Whether it’s polishing a UCAS personal statement, preparing for an apprenticeship assessment centre, or brushing up on the maths and English skills many applications test for, a bit of focused one-to-one support can make either route feel far less daunting.

Neither path is the “safe” or “risky” one — they’re just structured completely differently, and the biggest advantage in September is simply knowing which clock you’re working to. Track both calendars, keep options open where it makes sense, and let the actual offers — not the application process — be what decides the direction.
